C4000 problem

When i turn the camera on to the 'P' position, the monitor remains dark but will have shooting information. two seconds later, it goes completely dark. However, if i switch to the 'A/S/M' selection from the 'off' selection, it is fine. Further, i can switch to the 'P' from 'A/S/M' and everything is fine.

Is this a common problem? Anyone have any idea how much it would be to fix it?
