Well, I've been in the market to get an amateur/semipro dslr to upgrade from pns and I know in the world of cameras stuff is constantly changing. Right now I like the XTi and the D80 but I was wondering if Canon's CMOS III sensor is going to be a lot better than the II. I know it was recently deployed in the pns line and hear it will be in the dslrs too. Is Canon going to have an XTi like camera with this? Will the D80 be dropping in price soon or is it just worth getting what I want now and not looking back at what I could get now?

Just trying to decide, wait, etc.

I believe you mean DIGIC III, not CMOS III. CMOS is referring to the imaging chip that captures light, DIGIC refers to the processor inside the camera that processes that information. It is almost certain that the newer models comming out (after the XTI) will have the DIGIC III chip, and it is almost certain that they will be a little better at processing the information. What I always tell people who are contemplating waiting for the next best product is this: If the next camera is right around the corner and you can wait then that might be a good idea, but not purchasing a camera now just to see what the next one will offer is not a good idea because you will be waiting forever. There will ALWAYS be a better version around the corner.

Good Luck

There will most likely be a camera to replace the 30D in March with the chip you mentioned. The 30Ds have been out for a while and are discounted and have a great rebate going on now making them a terrific value.

Based on when the XTi was released don't expect to see it upgraded for over a year.

The D80 is a new camera and isn't even being discounted by B&H photo. Don't expect to see a price drop on this camera for a long time.

Based on all of the above and a heck of a lot of research I purchased my first DSLR last week- The Canon 30D.
