I have a DSC72 camera for a quite a long time.I am an old-time amateur photo-fun. Worked with different type of cameras.

At this camera just one VERY IMPORTANT thing I can't make. To left the background of my picture OUT OF FOCUS, BLURRED! I have all my pics. sharp
al the way to the background! I want just a short "Depth of field"!!

At the old type cameras we allow "wide-open-diaphragram" and "HI-shutter-speed"

As an example: for a portrait the face must be in focus but all the background MUST BLURRED.

How I may to acheev this IMPORTANT EFFECT?

Please, may you have a problem like I have?

Regards & waitng for your advise.

Compact cameras have a tiny sensor and very short real focal lengths of the lens, compared to slrs and dslrs.

That combines to equal a massive depth of field, I think someone once stated that f2.8 on a compact might be equal to f11 (for depth of field) on a slr.

You will need the background further away from the subject and zoom in to further reduce the dof.

Thanks for your reply. In a very comprehensive booklet provided with the camera, NO A WORD ABOUT CONTROLLING the APERTURE! It is a very big disadvantage. Yes according to you advise, I already tried to shot from some 20 centimeter, and far background of few meters, the result is a SMALL out of focus effect. Not satisfies my requirement, comparing with my non-digital cameras. Just pity,I was afraid to get these answer as you gave.I have to look for a NOT SO SOPHISTICATED digital CAMERA BUT LONGER FOCAL LENGTH
to STATISFIES my QUITE SIMPLE REQUIREMENT. May you point out a camera type like I need?
