As you can tell, I'm a noob to SLR photography, so I don't know if the issue I'm having is normal or not. I just got my cheap K2 + 50 f/1.8 II for my black and white film class, planning of course to use the 50mm for digital as well.
Anyway, the problem is that when the lens is tilted downwards in MF mode, the focus ring gets real stiff and you can hear the motor moving a bit. If the MF/AF switch works as I suspect, I'd think it's the motor falling back into place a little when it's pointing towards the ground. It works fine at angles a little less than horizontal or pointing upward at any angle.
It just concerns me because any MF I do pointing remotely downward is that much more difficult, makes it very annoying and the noise is not good
Any other owners of this lens, let me know if this happens to you. If it's normal I'll probably just spring for a used 50mm f/1.4 USM and if it's not then I'll send this one back to b&h

Yeah that's what I figured, now it actually sticks at first as if the motor gear or whatever it is, is sticking to it. I have good luck

if you have money for the 1.4 get it. from what i can tell of other pictures i've seen the background blur on the 1.8 just doesn't look right. still can't beat the bargain though.

You know there is a 50mm 1.2 out now just get that one!:p
I'm seriously thinking of saving for it. I can't wait for someone to buy it and post some pics.

OK! $1600 later I imagine I'd be pretty happy (and broke).
Anyway I figure I'll give the 1.8 another chance, I have to save up for my 17-40L :D
edit: I saw some guy at dpreview.com forums post some samples. Nothing particularly great imo, didn't really show the lens capability. Apologies if he's reading this :p

Oh, that show is coming to my town soon first week of Nov. I was loitering around my local camera shop and they gave me some free tickets. Any requests for shots or shooting conditions you would like to see if I can get my hands on one?
P.S. it's $1799.99 candian.... not bad....
