I'm finally moving to a digital SLR from my Canon 35mm. Is there a clear winner in the $800-1100 price range? Can I use my Canon lenses on any other camera, such as the new Pentac that is to release soon?

You can't use your Canon lenses on Pentax DSLRs...

What kind of lenses are they? EF? FD? you may not be able to use them fully functional on any DSLR....

If they're EF lenses then yes you can use them on the current crop of canon digital bodies. The canon 20d is a clear winner in that price bracket. It's currently 979 body only. The 30d is currently 1,169 and if you ask me not really worth the extra cash. It's got a bigger screen but it's not used for anything more than review and menu stuff anyways so it's not a really important part of an slr (to me at least.) The only thing that i like about the 30d that MIGHT make it worthwhile is the spot metering but i never had it so i don't miss it. Partial metering is more than enough of a spot for me. It's worth mentioning that the 30d and the 20d share the EXACT same sensor and image processor so the quality of the photo's are going to be the same. So yeah, get a 20d and be happy. :-)

The correct answer to that question is no. However, if you have Canon lenses (and you determine they will work for you on a new Canon dSLR), I'd get the 30D.

if you're starting without re-usable lenses, i'd go for the xt/xti or d50/d70s. this will leave you with just enough room for possibly the sigma 17-70, which is a great alternative to the kit lens.
