Something's missing. I think. Maybe. Can you try a B&W to see how that works?
I'm no good at still life though so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Bumped the contrast and dropped the brightness

I kind of like it, but I'm partial to these type of shots.
One suggestion - what if you shot down the edge fence with a very narrow DOF, positioned low to the fence (lay down to take the shot)? I think this would make for a neat shot.

The photo by itself is good in terms of focus and exposure, however, I got a feeling that something is missing in terms of story telling. For some reasons, the photo does not give me any excitement at all.
I am still new to photography, so the followings are only suggestions.
I think the excess space on upper left corner is kind of distraction. Try to trim it, see how does that change the overall feeling.
Another thing I can think of right now is one of those train rails photos, which you can see the rails give the feeling that they extend into infinity. You can try to create that feeling or just include some object with brighter color, like a leaf, to provide not only contrast, but a main character of the story that the photo tries to tell.
B&W does look better. Anyone knows why? Could it be the fact the contrast is somehow removed or reduced?

I think it's the opposite...B&W is more contrasty. It works because the grass is so green and distracting in color, at least IMO.
