As I said, I have a three-year-old Fuji 5000 which has suddenly started taking horrible, washed-out pics with the flash. I've set the flash to all the different settings and it changes nothing. Any help is appreciated.

Here are some things you might try. Maybe they will work. Your are using ISO 200, set it to a lower ISO. You are using Pattern metering, try center or spot (if available). Brightness Value is set at -0.35, is this what you want?

I think JLV nailed the problems.

I tried all that and got a fraction of a better photo but it's still just absolutely flooding with light. I wonder if my shutter is stuck or something. I'm going to keep playing with it. I'm saving up for a new camera but I'm stuck with this one until then. Thanks for all your help.

Can you set your aperture manually? I notice that it is a large opening.

The flash sensor is the little round sensor just below the flash on the popped up flash element shown in the photo above (taken from this site's review). If it's blocked or dirty, you would tend to get too much flash. Just check to make sure?

Another thing can cause issues with flash. Are you using a lens hood for your shots? Take it off, if so, again, just to make sure.
