I have been researching my next purchase. I am keeping with the "higher" quality (unfortunately) non "L" range primes. I seem to be attracted to available light (thanks CW..btw, where has Jamie been lately) photography.

Although I wish I could afford the 85mm f/1.2, it just isn't gonna happen.

My targets at this point are: 85MM f/1.8 and 100mm f/2.0.

Prices are about $20 between each other. I have noticed the 85 seems highly regarded in this forum space.

1.)The difference between 1.8 and 2.0 should be negligable correct??

2.) What is the experience between the two?

3.) Does the 30D 1.6 crop "REALLY" cause any issues/difference?'

NOTE: besides MTF data, the ONLY specific data I have read is that the 100 gives a little more depth to images in a portrait setting, but I think that was on a FF camera.

Maybe splitting hairs, but......OPINIONS??????

I know a woman who shoots sports with her 100mm and her 85mm. She says the 100 is easier to use. I don't know why or how...she hasn't been able to explain it to me in a way that makes it clear. She just says AF is easier. No idea what that means. She didn't say it's faster. She just said she gets more keepers. She's also wierd.

I don't have both though so a personal first hand comparison I cannot do. I can say I do like the 85mm so far. I've only owned it a couple weeks now and haven't really used it extensively but it's a pretty big bang-for-buck. Resonably sharp wide open and colors are good. Lacks some contrast compared to an L but that's correctable.

f/1.8 and f/2 are 1/3 stop apart. Negligible in most cases but MIGHT be the difference between freezing something and not freezing it. Depends what/when/how/where you shoot.

Mate, I'd go the 100mm f/2 - just to be different from all these 85mm clowns.:D
