I bought DSC-W5 for my wife to replace an Olympus c4000 that crapped out. She uses it strictly on automatic. It takes up to a few seconds to capture an image after pressing the button. I don't understand this. All the reviews I read say the camera is so fast. Is there something wrong with this camera or is it setup wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

Are you taking pictures in low light? It takes a while for the camera to find the focus in low light situations. You can pre-focus on your subject by holding the shutter button down halfway. Then, when you are ready to shoot push the button the rest of the way. It's tough with a rapidly moving subject.

Are you using flash? It may take some time to charge up the capacitors after firing the flash for the next shot or when just starting up. I assume this isn't your problem.

I am photographing a todder that does not sit still for long. It doesn't matter if it is in well lit outdoor shots or indoors. I use the flash on automatic. I rarely rapidly take consecutive shots. I even have trouble when I press halfway first to prefocus. Is the problem my son moving when the camera is trying to auto focus?

did you already set to full auto? not twilight, not fireworks, etc etc.
just automatic
then try lowering the resolution.
choose forced flash
n try to take pictures.

if still slow. hmm.. maybe there's something wrong.
