Hopefully those with an S2/S3 and a TeleConverter will contribute to this thread. So viewers can have a wide and varied analysis of the available converters.
First up TC-DC58B 1.5x 58mm
These are by no means the best this camera and TC can do they were just what I could throw together quickly.

Hey guys..
Though I am disappointed with my DCR-2020 PRO, let me share still share some sample shots for other people to view to compare. The masgnification is powerful but the side blur is soo great. Still shots are not very pretty but videos appear very nice.
I will only make a cross-reference to another thread for the comparison shots.. you guys can view them here.

This is a really useful thread but the more pics i see the more convinced i am that these lenses aren't worth the money! Anyone got any sports shots using an add-on lens? I'm after something that will give me sharp pics with a shallower DOF than the S2 at full tele-photo.... I'm beginning to suspect that I'm going to need to go DSLR to get the results I'm after :(

Cat I know what you mean but take care when you say not worth it...most of these zoom lens run under $150 and give you around 648mm...a good 70mm-200 lens runs around $1600 now to get to 648mm that will cost you $4K plus. This does not take into the consideration the cost of a dSLR body and the time to become proficient with both items.

Yeah, when i was at the football game last weekend there were 4 photographers there one taking only player shots for a yearbook and the rest were taking action shots.
One guy was complaining because he only had a 70-200mm lens and he felt it was not nearly long enough. The other person had a 70-400 and she probobly got the best shots. They were talking about the lenses and the one guy with the 200 said i wish i had the money for the 400. I didnt want them to know i was using a 600! lol

So what is the general consensus as to which TC to purchase for the S3?
It appears that, as stated earlier by others, anything over 2x can be discounted. 1.5 - 1.7x appear to be the right mark for pic quality etc.
Now to decide on the best one to get. Hmmmmm......

Raynox 1850 pro is in all likelihood a good lens there is no problem with the lens or the camera. the problem lies in the magnification as noted anything beyond 1.7 seems to go hay wire the 1850 as indicated by its name is a 1.85x lens. Therein lies the problem...hth

On the S2 and S3 anyway.
They built it for something, the S2 or S3 just wasnt the camera.
I have a DC58 that looks like dog sh!t also. Its not the DC58A, or the DC58B or N but its just the DC58.

let your eyes be the judge... My recommendation is the Canon TC-DC58B not because I own it but because if I had it to do all over again, I'd still by it for the IQ... The images I posted are not the most dramatic but they are sharp and clear. That's what was important to me and that's whay I chose it...hth

I am inclined to agree about the Canon TC but the cost in Oz dollars is up there..... Cheapest is about $170 AUD. Outta my immediate price range....
XaiLo, can you post a pic of the S3 with the Canon TC fitted? I would like to see how it looks.
Do I still need the converter if I go the Canon branded TC? If so there is an extra cost again.
I know about paying for quality etc but surely there is a cheaper lens out there that has a decent IQ... Hopefully any way !!!
Anyone else got a diff TC to post some examples of?

we all post process images.. u can get a TC with just average IQ (not full in colour, a little soft etc..) but then again u can add saturation, sharpness and all that junk in photoshop.. kinda confusing me too.. even if you do MINIMAL photoshopping, youre gonna resize your picture down anyway... i sometimes dont see the point of buying the best equipment and paying large sums when theres photoshop :o
anyway, rant is over and my recommendation goes to the Sony VCL-DH1758.. ive seen too many sample shots that do prove its a worthy lens.. i mean most people wouldnt touch 1.7x TC on cameras like the S3.. the only other TC i know of that was very popular was the Oly Tcon 17 (also 1.7x) however.. when the sony came out, the image quality comparison blew away competition.. then i think Oly decided to discontinue the lens..
TEMPA, if i remember, you want to shoot wildlife and want the most zoom possible without compromising quality? well give this site a look and you'll be surprised with the picture :) http://www.aakatz.com/h1whitepaper/part11.htm
I must say this lens may have different coatings compared to the S3.. as it is a Sony going on a Canon.. i cant verify if they have same coats.. i hope this helps :)

Yeah, e-bay jobbie
The kid kicking the football was the canon i think. I use them all randomly, i did however use the iS pro last night.
I shot from my car, i think the field is about 50 yards or so off the road, then they were near the far end of the field. I think about 100-125 yards maybe. Im a bad judge of distance but you can kinda see the distance.

52mm iS lens
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/BowerR64/Camera/Telephoto/52mmiSfootball2.jpg
I shot with the smaller one and i forgot i wanted to switch them, i let it get a little dark before i changed to the 58mm (pro larger lens) by then it was a little dark on the field to get decent action shots. The field is kinda old and the lighting for the field is really weak. They are old old lights

There are some hummingbird pictures in the bird gallery that really show what the teleconverter is capable of.

This one was taken through two glass doors, handheld....one of my standard disclaimers. I've yet to take a picture under ideal conditions, such as on a tripod with good light, but I'll try to do that soon just to show what the lens can do. I've had this lens for at least a month now and I love it. I'm awaiting the Raynox HD7000 Pro wideangle now. I got that for $101 at 2filter.com today.

http://129.79.35.49/images/temp/CanonS3wRaynox1540b.JPG
These are big images, but I wanted anyone to be able to see some detail. One thing you can't see is the nice gold ring on the end of the Raynox lens...just makes it look higher quality ;) Overall the lens really does feel like it's of very good quality and at least with my black model, it doesn't look too bad with everything attached.
In the pics you can see the aluminum barrel adapter, which I got from lensmateonline. I went with the 58mm, and because of that you'll see I need a 58/52mm step down ring. The rubber pieceon the end I got to protect the lens when I set the camera down, rest the end on things to steady the camera, and so that I can press the lens against windows. It was only a few dollars and I'd highly recommend it, if only to protect the finish on the end of the lens.
The setup is heavy, but it's solid and takes great pics.
A couple of other things I forgot to mention. With this setup you don't need to be at full zoom to use it. I've seen it posted somewhere, and I'm not exactly sure how much of the zoom range you have, but I'd say it's at least 50%, probably much more. Second, I think the Raynox site mentions this, but these lenses are threaded on the end. For me that was a significant factor, as at the very least I want to be able to use a polarizing filter.

I thought those were only on when your in "my custom colors" in the effects section. I had that in the "my colors off" shouldnt that set everything to a default setting?
Bower, default is Zero across the board. When you adjust the in camera sharpness, contrast, vivids etc, it is set across the board as well.. so that if you switch to a different mode, it's still on. Some people have setting they leave on at all times.. like for me, it's saturation plus 1, contrast plus 1 and the sharpness i have set at 0 and sometimes i set it to negative 1.
These are those "Magic" settings people talk about for in camera adjustments..i'll try to find the thread later... But these are all preferance related. Like i believe it may be Xailo who thought the in camera sharpness was too strong and so he turned it down a nitch or two and leaves it that way. I'm pretty sure it was Xailo.. but i could be wrong on that one.
Hope that helps Bower.

But see if your say in manual and you go to the effects settings you can chose vivid, sepia, B/W, neutral and the "custom effects" are the settings where you change the sharpness and contrast but there is also an option called "effects off" so it shouldnt be setting my custom effects if its to off right?
So what if i set the sharpness to -2 and the contrast to +2 and the satruation to +2 then i chose vivid mode? will it be extreme? i mean vivd is already boosting the contrast and the saturation. I would think the custom settings would only be on if i was on that effect.

I think the SLR look is neat, the square lenses look professional and the 58mm just seems to match the S2 and S3 the best. It gives it a neat little attitude, its a smaller camera that looks big.

Its always great to look cool, personally I think I always do, just a fact, but my interest is in the quality of the images. How much of a difference is there between 52 and 58MM and which has the most advantages relative to lenses, filters, etc,. Also there interrelation to Tele and Macro photography. This is all relating to the S3 IS of course!
It appears that all the really experienced guys on this site use the 58mm format, why, is it definately the best approach to the best aspects of the S3 IS ?:)

Well i dont have a good eye for photo composure or somthing so i get into the technical side of it i think or atleast i try. I just got a camera to take pictures of my guitars to trade on e-bay and stuff but now its turned into a full blown hobby or somthing. Im not sure actualy what im doing i just know its fun and cool and im enjoying it alot.
I found an auction on e-bay for a 10 lot of broken FlatFoto 3mp radioshack slim cameras and i never had as much fun with a camera as i have with these things. I fixed 8 of the 10 and gave 3 away. These little cameras shoot in raw and its COOL! There are all these little hacks for it and man what a blast! :D

There is no difference between the 58mm and 52mm filters either in quality or viewable area. Any obstructions would be in the construction of the filter itself (get a decent filter). 52mm filters are cheaper. Different manurfacturers offer compatible lenses, this does not mean they were made with the S2/S3 in mind. So hence, the various sizes and you would of course match the lens to adapter and not the other way around.

What about vignetting? Wouldn't a 58 mm lens or filter give less vignetting (dark corners) than a 52 mm? Since it is larger, it would reduce the vignetting at the wide end of the zoom range, I think. Any thoughts about this? Am I right?

Not necessarily Wesan, I use 52mm filters with no vignetting problems at all. As I stated it has more to do with construction. My Canon tele is 58mm believe me when I say it suffers from vignetting at the wide end big time. You have to think about what actually causes the vignetting to begin with. The outer most lens on the S3 is only 30mm and is recessed only about 10mm. So with a 52mm filter there is already 20mm of clearance built in. The only ways to cause vignetting is to make the glass actually smaller than 52mm or extending the rim outward which produces the same effect as having the additional tubeing of a tele lens attached.
BowerR64
10-24-2006, 11:36 PM
They could get rid of it using a larger rear lens or moving the lens closer to the stock lens. The problem is how it moves when it goes into telephoto. Since it moves out you are foced to mount it at its fuethest position then you get vignetting.

Xailo, thanks for the education, believe me I need it! Something I didn't ask is the lenses you use seem to dictate the use of 52 vs 58 mm.
Do the Sony (VCL-DH1758) and Canon (TC-DC58B lenses discussed above need a 58 mm adapter such as the "LensMate" to function on the S3 IS?
Also, do you know of anyone who has tried the Sony ( DH-1758) lens on the S3 ? Different lens coatings without proof of there compatibility scare the devil out of me!

Let me clarify a little both of my filters are 52mm and are expensive. Actually I just checked www.2filter.com and they can now be had for $100 wow I paid nearly twice that for the two, timing is everything. LOL anyway both can also be used on some dslr lenses. If your going after better glass then there is nothing wrong with going 52mm especially when it's cheaper there are quite a few budget shoppers here I am just frugal. But I'll spend money when quality is involved because they meet my needs. You gain nothing by going and paying more for 58mm filters. Unless you have an alternative use for that size. Filters you can pretty much pick and choose your sizes compatible supermacro, macro, wide angle, and tele lenses your at the mercy of the manufactur as to what size they are available in.

Here's my setup (I don't have the camera with me):
DH-1758 : HOYA HMC UV Filter : HOYA HMC Polarizer : Lensmate Adapter : S3
My original pricture with just the DH1758 and the S3 makes whole camera look A LOT bigger than it actually is (I suppose the saying how the camera 10 adds pounds may apply here).

The "quote" you're talking just means you're "quoting" something someone previously said and so the forum sets it apart so it's clear you're "quoting" someone. Someone will probably find a better way to say it than I did and will probably "quote" me on it. =)

Look here - http://picasaweb.google.com/wmb.porter/20061109ZoomLensTests?authkey=k7erVBSGLsbRgmk-f0q-xFUUiLY
Huge increase in zoom over the standard 12X but very noticeable edge softness and noticeable CA on the outer edges of the shots as well.
But damn that's some impressive zoom power....

In photography I've come to learn there are just tradeoffs that you'll have to live with and the three top TCs are no different. You have to choose what's more Important to you. For me it was image quality ergo I went with the Canon. This comparison was not available when I made my choice but I did my own. I collected different pics, on different sites, of all the lenses and put them in a folder. Far as I could tell Canon had the superior image quality. You won't be disappointed with it. :)

Hey guys,
I have borrowed from a relative, a 2x T/C to use on the S3 so I can convince myself they are no good.
It has worked brilliantly in proving to me they simply are not compatible... The pics are shocking. The T/C I have been trying iappears to be a single chunk of glass whereas I get the impression from what I have read the Sony lens is made up seperate lenses within the body.
What I have also seen is the autofocus rarely gives a green box with the 2X lens attached. Is this an issue with the Sony 1.7X as well? I am wanting the Sony but it worries me that the autofocus may become very hit and miss like I am seeing currently.
Can anyone confirm if there is a decrease in the accuracy of the autofocus when using the better quality T/C's like the Sony or the Canon?
Thanks TEMPA

They were talking about the lenses and the one guy with the 200 said i wish i had the money for the 400. I didnt want them to know i was using a 600! lol
To be fair, unless they had full frame sensors (Canon 1D/5D), a 70-200 lens has a range of 112-320mm and a 100-400 lens has a range of 160-640mm.

hiyall, new here. just got an S3 IS a few weeks back - having a blast. anyway, i was just skimming through this thread and snap! that is some telephoto rig you got there @27spots! i was actually checking lensmate, but found something i think is wayyyy better; the holy moly of S3 IS lenses (at least, to my knowledge) - the raynox DCR-2020PRO (http://www.raynox.co.jp/english/digital/S2is/index.htm). i've been checking their website and gave up looking for prices. does anybody know how much this thing costs? while the thought of getting a DSLR, probably a 350d or 400d is very enticing, i love my S3 IS. i'll stick with this indefinitely.
otherwise, any suggestions on what i should get? i want to do a lot of tele shots (the main reason why i got the S3 IS). anyway, thanks ^_^
I hope you can still view this reply, ditchazeroth. I own a DCR-2020pro for about 4 months now. I think I only took less than 10 shots with it. It has since then been inside its box and I never used again. The power is awesome but the quality is very poor for the S3. The only clear part is about 20% at the center then it gets blurred going to the edges. It has too much purple fringing as well as when I tried to take a shot of the moon. Although I am thinking of using it during field concerts or games. It does take very good videos with the S3 though...
I have post some shots in this forum. you can check these out here:

thanks for the save @jonalta. 12x is plenty enuf, getting the 2020pro would be overkill - and image quality is priority one.
at this point, i'm just going to get a 58mm adapter and a hoya CPL, as well as a UV filter... and maybe a petal hood (for good looks ;) ) i'm looking for a heavy duty white-colored adapter - i wonder where we could get one? i found one at ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-S3-58mm-lens-adapter-Canon-S3-IS-58mm-lens-tube_W0QQitemZ170052351518QQihZ007QQcategoryZ11618 6QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem) but looking at the build quality, i'd rather get a black lensmate adapter or the canon adapter. i just want filters now. the next thing would be a good slave flash. any ideas? ^_^

you're welcome. I have seen others who are using the white adapter from Auto IS, Inc thru eBay. It does look cool on an S2, but i prefer black on the S3. I like the rubber ring in the Auto IS adapter (although i dont have one). If you want durability, better go for the lensmate adapter because the canon adapter is plastic.
I am using a simple Panasonic slave flash although any slave flash would work. it all depends on the power you need. There might be a thread here for slave flashes.
Oh, i found this (http://cgi.ebay.com/Canon-S3-canon-powershot-S3-high-power-slave-flash_W0QQitemZ170067149359QQihZ007QQcategoryZ1521 5QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem) on the same Auto IS site.

I just want to know what kind of lens is that?

i don't need too much. i was actually thinking of getting a vivitar df200 (http://www.amazon.com/Vivitar-DF200-Digital-Flash-200/dp/B00009MKJ2)... i'll just find a way of mounting it on my s3. as for the adapter, i just may get a lensmate - if i don't get to finish the one i've been making... good thing my dad has a drill press ^O^

I have only just stumbled on this forum, but have had my S3 IS since it was released. I managed to get mine for a screaming deal, but that isn't the reason for this post.
I have been trying to make heads or tails out of all the information given in this thread. I'd love to be able to see all the info presented here in a comparison chart so that anyone can just look at the TC and see the dimensions, capability, pros and cons and any other information that might be helpful in one nice chart. It has answered quite a few questions, but brought up several more.
I'd be willing to do the compiling of the data in to a chart, but I'd most likely need help doing it.
