I have a Canon A620 and I was trying to connect it to my office machine and grab some pictures off of it. The problem is when I did that this morning I got this dialog box:

http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/8884/canonproblemfm8.png

Tried different ports, rebooting, resetting cable on both ends, refreshing USB ports, checking for new hardware, all the ususal common crap, didn't make a difference. A few points:

This camera works fine on my home machine, it hasn't "malfunctioned" as far as I know!
This camera has worked on this machine before.
I have not (nor have I ever in any previous canon model I've owned (A70, A85)) installed anything from the CD. Never had to, because I import pictures into Picasa, and do all my work there.
As far as I know, no hardware/driver changes have been made, unless it was something pushed down the line from Microsoft via their Updates.

Any guesses? Could this be caused by low power in the camera, or perhaps a bad cable? I know these are probably unlikely, but I thought I'd throw out a few guesses I had.

What makes it most frustrating is that this camera has worked on this machine before, it's never been a problem until this morning.

Ive heard alot about this one, its always the A620 too. I read a fix on the steves camera forums i forgot where it is though. There is about 3 pages of the topic and several other people who have this issue and after about 3 pages they finaly figured it out.

If i remember right there was a problem with a security hole. It left some port open or somthing and when xp figured it out it closed the port and that did somthing to the canon software.

Maybe some one else has some more info on it?

Well i think the newer versions of zoom browser have fixed the problem.

Why couldnt you try a newer version of zoom browser and if it doesnt work uninstall it.

Zoom browser? What's that? If that's some of the stuff that's installed from their disc, I've never had it, as I've said above.

The camera works at home, used to work up here, now does not. The problem can't be about Canon's software, since I"m not using it. If I can find out what the actual problem is, I can try attacking it that way.

After all that... It ended up being the cable. Sigh.

I found another one in my drawer, and used that - no problems. Took a pair of scissors to the old cable.

Yeah, even though i dont know what UPNP is, do you?

"Thanks for the help.

But this is really not cool on Canon's part.

To rely on UPNP to run their software is not a good idea.

UPNP is a performance hog and worse, a security hole.

There's a reason why it's disabled on all our PC's.

And I agree that having the software just fail to run with no indication as to why is another Canon blunder."

I thought microsoft ran an update when it figured out there was a security hole and then changed the setting in windows and that killed the comunication between windows and the camera.

I get this message once in a blue moon. I forget what i do when it happens, but it has something to do with what the camera is doing when you plug it in. Whenever it has happens to me, i just turn off the camera, unplug, plug it back in, put the camera in play mode, and turn on. Then it works.
