it's been months for me and i'm getting that itch....i'm either gonna buy the 85mm f/1.8 or save up a grand and sell my 70-200 f4L and get the 70-200 f/2.8 IS. for what i do, the 85 is probably what i'll go with and just keep dreaming about the 70-200. i also really really want the 400mm f/5.6 but that one's gonna have to go to the back of the line for sure. i imagine for now i'll keep renting the super teles the few days out of the year i'll actually need them.

there's an awesome shop here in dallas that doesn't actually charge your card a deposit at all to rent stuff. so i can actually rent the super shit like 400mm f/2.8 IS for i think around $75-100 a day. a little off topic.

Hi my name is Rick and i'm a buyaholic too. It's been two days since my last purchase. BG-E2 for a 20d. It was 169 dollars. *weeps*

adam75south
10-13-2006, 09:20 AM
so what exactly makes that bg-e2 so good?....you get sick of turning the camera sideways? i know my pics kinda come out a little crooked sometimes when i want them tall. is that it? i don't really get it?...or is it the extra battery?...what's funny is i already want one and i haven't even heard your explanation....this is so sad.

Thanks Bonjib... now I have to clean the subway out of my keyboard!! DUDE I didnt expect that.

does that grip come with a second batt???

adam75south
10-13-2006, 09:41 AM
if i remember right...you have to buy the extra battery....but it also somehow uses AA batteries if you would rather do that. i might be wrong though. but that is great and all, but my one battery lasts forever. i don't really need extra battery life. i've taken 1200 photos and used the camera to transfer them on my computer without the battery going dead before. i'm thinking the MAIN advantage would be not having to turn your arms like a retard to get tall shots and the ability to keep your pictures straight(as in not crooked). also it comes with a shutter release right?

Just checked it out at BH... all that you have listed is right.. my 20d has great batt. life. my father has a pantex (sp?) his batt. life really SUCKS!! it would be cool to have the dual batt. life.. for $170 they should have some way to charge it with out talking them out.. cuz stock charger can only do one at a time. Plus its a nice counter wieght for the larger "L" lenses.

I have reached the point of diminishing returns, concerning the acquisition of new equipment.

The lensing is pretty much complete and although there are a few items I could add... the words "should add?" are more applicable.

My wish list is pretty reflective of where I would like to go with all of this, but then again, macro photography seems a little small-minded for me. I find myself spending more on consumables, than breakables, these days. Ink, paper (print and photographic), film (yep, still shooting emulsions), developpment costs and cleaning supplies.

I do wish their was a better printer, out there... my Canon i6600 has some decent resolution, but a much larger ink capacity would be much nicer. IMHO, these $12/cartridges are a pretty pricey way to produce images.

Yes, it's true... I have had my eye on the EPSON 9800. Who told you guys? LOL :D $5000 on a good day!

16341

The way I figure it, "Go big, or stay at home!" 44" across is pretty darn huge. It takes a good-sized ink cartridge to deal with that size, too. $250 for a set of seven!

16342

Anyone hearing good things about high-capacity ink jets with good resolution? Something affordable. Right now, costs are averaging $.40/shot. Color Laser can get you to $.28/shot... but, it'll take months to recover the equipment costs.

I figure if enough people got together... we might be able to get something done. I know, "How many people are enough, Don?."

Well, since you asked... how about half the population of China? Let's get them all digitals for Christmas! and see what develops.

Been two weeks since my first purchase but it feels like eternity. I need a bag (I'm thinking the CompuRover AW) and am trying to decide between the 28/1.8 and the 50/1.4. I'll get a few filters soon and shoot for either a wide angle or telephoto by year's end.

Hey don.. I have a HP 750C (36" wide) it was the bad boy about 6 yrs ago. 600x600dpi. right after I paid $5500 for it they came out with on that did 1200x1200dpi for just a little more!! It was only about a year later after I got mine. Mine is used for blueprints though.. so I guess it does fine for what I bought it for.. would be nice for pic now though.. oh well

the place is called light tec. they have a website www.lighttec.com but it is outdated and the prices are not accurate. they've went up since. and the site says they charge full amount to your card as deposit, but when i went up there with the photographer i assist at times, i asked them if they take full deposit and they said no, they just take your card info. so we rented the 70-200mm f/2.8 non IS and babied that thing like my life depended on it...you can even rent 5d's.

anyway, it's by motor street and hwy 35 near downtown.

I bought the bg-e2 for the handling. It does come with focus point and exposure lock buttons and most importantly a shutter release button. Yes i got tired of turning the camera sideways and getting crooked shots when 90% of my pictures are vertical. I didn't even order a second battery to go with it because my battery life is fine for what i do. About the AA support... it's useless. The camera doesn't last long at all on AA's. I went on a shoot and one of the other guys there had a 20d with a battery grip and he let me play with it for a bit and it makes the camera handle so much better (especially with the 70-200 2.8L he had on it.) So i came home and promptly slipped back into my old habits and bought it. Plus it makes the camera look more like the big boys if nothing else. :-)

dammit....now it's on my to do list. thanks alot bonji.

I recently picked up a Canon battery grip(e) for my XT. Makes a big dfference in handling with a heavy lens and flash on it. I've seen third party grip(e)s that are cheaper than the Canon for both the 30/20D and XT/XTi but can't recall who makes them. Some even come with two extra LiOn batteries so shop around.

I bought my BG-E2 about a month after I got the EOS 20D. I came to grips with it and haven't let go, since. It's great for supporting the IS capability of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens... with IS on for hours.

I usually run out of room on the 2GB CF before the batteries die. IMO, it's a good choice for practicality and egonomics. ;)

it's been about 10 months since i made any real gear purchases. wait, does a cf card and 320gig external harddrive to store all them shots count? BTW for the guy who helped me out with the external drive thanks - you know who you are. i think i got my equipment basics outta the way so if i want to improve upon it the next purchases are each gonna be huge. so despite what looks like contentment the list and total is actually bigger than ever :o . just too broke to buy actually buy any of those things yet

eh schaps, minor correction: there are 9 inks for that thing, 8 depending on your uses and that's about $90 per cartridge, not $250 for a set of seven. might as well wait till you have a 1dsII or 5d replacement since your camera would run out of steam long before 44x66 or whatever. hey where would you hang those prints anyways? ;)

I bought my Mum an EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro yesterday. Bloody nice lens.

It's been a while since my last significant acquisition. Although it looks like something may be required by the end of the week.

All I'll say at this stage is that "f/2.8" features prominently, and maybe a second body to mount it.

Those of you who know me know that this can mean only one thing...:(

17-55 EF-S with a 30D attached? This could replace your A70.

I have been staring at B & H photo's page for days not... and I still do not know what I want to get!! UUUGGGGGGG

I know im the only one that can make the choice... maybe I will feel better if I write it down :)

1.) 70-200 L f/2.8 IS
2.) 100-400 L f/4.5-5.6 IS
3.) 70-200 L f/4 * 100 f/2.8 macro * 430EX Speedlite * BG-E2 Grip
4.) 70-200 L f/2.8 * 100 f/2.8 macro
5.) 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS * 100 f/2.8 macro * 430EX Speedlite * BG-E2 Grip

I have about $1700 to play with and I think I want a L lens for sure, just not sure what one. SOMEONE ELSE SPEND MY MONEY FOR ME.... I CANT MAKE UP MY MIND!!!

My advice: "Buy what you need to do the images you want." End of story. Cost -> irrelevant. Creativity and sourcing (lenses and stuff) -> Mandatory

Remember ol' Don's "golden rule":

"You ain't got it, you don't get it."

It's P&S (that's plain and simple... not point & shoot!) :p

If i had 1700 to drop on a piece of equipment my very next purchase would be the 70-200 f/2.8L IS. I'd then recomend saving up after that purchase to grab up a battery grip to help tame that beast.
