I am about to recieve my new Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8, but I do not have a filter that fits the 77mm attachment size. I am looking for a nice cirular polarizer, or just a UV filter. Could I have have some opinions on which one would be the best to purchase? I know some brands like Hoya or B+W, but I have no clue whatsoever what the numbers mean for different UV filters and circular polarizers. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money, so am looking more at a cheap UV filter, so my lens doesn't get scratched. Thanks for any information, I appreciate your help

Cheap filter eh? An interesting pursuit given the coin you've just dropped on the lens...

Question: why did you buy a super-sharp lens only to blunt it with a crap filter?

Tell me your teasing us, please.

Christian is quite right
anything you stick in front of a lens must be of the highest optical quality or it defeats the purpose of your purchase
Hoya filters are optical quality glass

I agree. Buy the best filter as with a cheap filter you have the optical effect of a cheap lens.

hmm, good reason, to tell you the truth I didn't even think about how a cheap filter would effect the quality of the lens. I may have to just use some more of my money and just buy a Hoya filter. My intentions were to buy the lens and then later on buy a UV or Circular Polarizer filter later down the road, but I was thinking that I should just buy the filter as soon as I get my new lens so the glass will be in perfect condition, if I happened to re-sell it to upgrade maybe to the 70-200VR f/2.8. I also wasn't meaning a cheap filter, more like an inexpensive filter with good optical quality, but it all comes together for me that most likely the more expensive the filter, the better quality of image it will put out. Thanks everyone for your input.

Well yeah I might have to do that for a couple weeks until I get the money to buy a top notch filter. I just want to keep the lens in extremely good condition so I can have a high re-sale value. If I keep this lens in good condition, I have seen this lens on ebay used, for 800$ which is only $100 less that what I payed for. And the 800$ would go towards the 70-200VR.

Does anyone have any recommendations for Hoya filters? Right now I'm not looking for a Circular Polarizer, but just a UV/Haze filter. Any recs. would be helpfull, thanks alot everyone who posted.

after around 80,000 frames, constant lens switching, frequently shooting near water, sea spray, sand, wind, and not exactly what you would call being careful at times - i've not scratched a single lens element yet. so i really don't think having a filter is gonna make much difference. and as c-dub pointed out, ghosting/flare/etc. is a real problem with filters, even good coated ones

hmm thanks cw, and ReF. Yeah I don't want my photos turning out like that. I think I'll just save my money for an hotshoe flash like the SB800. I know I'm going to be really carefull with this lens, and not drop it or bump into anything with it, and I know I probably won't be shooting near water, unless I'm at a relatively far distance. Thanks for the opinions, it helps.
