I just received my S3-IS today. The first thing I noticed was a creaking sound when I gripped the grip. It feels like something wasnt assembled right. If I twist the grip slightly, it gets worse. Is this normal ? (I hope not)

Has anyone else had this issue?

Do you think I would have any trouble returning it to Amazon.com for a replacement?

uhmm depends on how loud it is.. mine makes a slight creak if i really press and grip it hard.. its plastic not aluminum or metal so they will creak a little..

if it feels like its too much i would send it back.. ;)

Try a display model, i usualy keep an eye on whats on display then i check em out after a few weeks and see if everything still works.

The S2 was one that suprised me, it was there on display for i swear 6 months if not more and that thing fired up every time i turned it on.

Another one was a canon SD that i read alot of complaints about a broken LCD. You know how people treat stuff in stores specialy when its not theirs and they didnt pay for it. I think it was an SD400 or 450 or somthing but i remember reading on this site a long post about cracked LCD screens and the display camera was fine.

I don't hear any creaking sounds when holding the camera with the grip, or when squeezing it hard. I feel that the camera has a solid finish. Just wondering… where is your camera made? Mine is made in Japan.

My S2 has a bit of creaking in the grip, it's more of a feel than an actual sound. It's never been a problem, I just chalked it up to the body being plastic, and therefore not all that solid.

The box says "Made in Japan"

Mines feels like it moves ever so slightly and creaks if I wiggle it. but I have large hands. Hasn't been a problem though.

Hi canonmonkey,

Mine also has a slight play to it and creaks too. When I go to grab my camera by the grip area I can feel a slight movement and hear a creak sound. The S3 IS I had before this one that was defective (focusing problem) was the same way too. I'm kind of thinking this is normal for this camera. I also have big hands as well.

Take care,

I went to Circuit City and Best Buy tonight to play with the floor model of the S3. Both had the same creaking problem, but mine is slighty worse.

This leads me to believe that it is a "normal" problem. I also notice that if I take my batterys out and leave the door open, the creaking problem is gone.

Anyone have any suggestions? Wish there was a way to fix it, but I can live with it. Its good to know its not just my camera :)

MR BONES 88,

What exactly was your focus issue? I have issues focusing sometimes, but it may take awhile in auto mode.

Got mine this week and mine is solid, no movement, no creaking, but I have small hands. Maybe all you guys don't know your own strength. ;)

Hi canonmonkey,

With my original S3 IS I received couldn't really focus when using the max optical zoom. It would focus on subjects closer, but not far away. This happened in all shooting modes handheld and also on a tripod. I believe it was a sensor problem. It also had a bad pixel as well. I returned it for another new S3 IS and this one works really nice. With my bad camera it would give me the green box saying that it was in focus, but was still blurry. Is this what your camera is doing?

Take care,
-Mr. Bone88

Its not doing that, it just takes a couple of trys to focus on the right object on the screen.
