www.lensrentals.com
Saw this while browsing around earlier. Has anyone heard of them or used them. Might have considered the 70-200L 2.8 last month on a trip to Wyoming. Wish I'd known it was at least a possiblility.

Oops! Didn't see it. But, it should at least draw more attention to the query.;)
No information at all save for it could be the same guy behind midsouthphotography.com

Hi all,
My name's Roger Cicala - I own Lensrentals.com. We've done local rentals (Memphis, TN) for a while specializing in longer telephoto lenses and bodies and opened for mail order rental in August. I don't splash adds all over the internet. Tend to rely on word of mouth and selected adds on photography websites.
We have a number of customers from the forums at POTN and FM, you can search for us at either site and get some recommendations. There are several other very good, reasonably priced mail order rental sites - but as best I can tell we have the largest selection of Canon gear, especially major telephoto lenses and bodies. We also are the only site still doing 3 day rentals and offering renter's insurance.
I love to chat about gear and you can email me through the site or at RCicala@ yahoo.com.

Indeed, Rhys, you were :-). Although Midsouthphotography is rather quiet since Lensrentals began going insane a couple of months ago:rolleyes: A little portrait work is all I've had time to do.
That sounds like a great deal - much easier to rent out lenses than to sit with models and uncooperative, bawling teenagers etc. I can also imagine it's a lot less interesting, sitting posting out lenses and processing returns etc.
I guess you'd be the guy to ask for opinions on lenses?

:D My experience is that everybody's got an opinion on lenses, even if they've never used them:D
I'm one of those people that the gear fascinates me as much as what it produces. I'm always wondering "how's that lens" so this business is as fun for me as photography. I do at least shoot with everything I sell to test it out so I guess I've got a little experience with a lot of lenses, and a lot of experience with a few.

I had a look at your site there your rates are very good especially including the insurance option. As soon as i see it pop up as in stock again i think i'm going to rent the 70-200 f/2.8L IS from you for a week. I've pretty much got my mind made up i'm going to buy it but playing with it for a week would really help me make my decision. I've shot with the lens but not much more than playing with someone elses for a few minutes. I'm glad this thread poped up.

What's your opinion on IS lenses, more specifically which do you think is better - an f4-5.6 with IS or an f2.8 without IS?
In terms of quality, how would you rate Tamron lenses against Canon L lenses? Is there sufficient difference to be visible?

BonjiB, I have two new 70-200 f2.8s on the way and should have them by the end of the week.
Rhys I'm a Tamron fan every since I got a 28-75 f 2.8 a couple of years ago. I stillthink one of the best value for the money lenses there is. I just got a 200-500 of there's and again am very impressed with it, especially considering the price. I think they both sum up my opinion on the Tamron vs Canon L question: The L's are slightly but clearly better, but the Tamron's give about 90% of the output for about 50% of the price.
As to the other question, it depends I think, entirely on what you shoot. For sports and stop action there's no substitute for speed. For portraiture, there's no substitute for a wide aperture's bokeh. But for walking around and nature photography I'll take IS every time.

Same as me. I love my 28-75. I even went for the 17-35 although I find the 70-300 is a little disappointing (hence its low price).
Having experienced the 70-300 I'm toying with the idea of replacing it with a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and I'm also thinking of getting a Tamron 11-18. Since both seem to be held in high esteem.
Personally, I like fast lenses but not for the speed. I feel the glass on a fast lens is a little better than the glass on a slower lens. I figure that if you take one f-stop off every lens in your collection you get the true worth of each lens. For example an f4-5.6 is really only good at f5.6-f8. The extra stop is squeezed in as a marketting ploy. IS can be invaluable although it's a toss-up. If I want lightweight then I have to go for IS. If I want the best quality then I have to go for heavyweight and the faster apertures. It's one reason why the Pentax K100D is so good - it's IS on all lenses.

The 70-200 f/2.8L IS? How can i be sure i can grab one up for a week? I'm definatly interested. I'm already well on my way towards my goal of saving for that lens but trying it out first in a no pressure setting (my camera bag) is definately worth a relatively small price. 80 bucks to try an awesome lens like that is well worth it. Just let me know when i should order or how i can reserve it or whatever the rules are with your site. Thanks.
