go to www.NewEgg.com and find the 1gb SD cards. Look for the cards that have good user reviews. If you see more than a few "Died after a month!" reviews then don't buy that card.
I personally have used all sorts of generic SD cards, Kingston, PQI, standard cards, high speed cards, etc with never a single problem.
Right now I've got a 150x PQI 2GB SD card in my S3 IS and another in my SD700.
I tested a "standard" cheap Kingston card in the S3 and it worked fine for normal use (including videos), the only downside I saw was that the high continous mode could only take about 15 pictures before the camera buffer filled up.

I used Trancend 2Gb 150x. It has enough memory, fast, and cheap :)

All electronics in US are much cheaper than in Canada. :(
I'll second and third and fourth the recommendations for the TRanscend 2GB SD cards from Newegg.
As stated, they're around $40/each with shipping.
They also carry a lifetime warranty.
I used to use SanDisk Ultra II and Extreme III cards in my S2 IS.
I now have (2) of the Transcend cards and love them. $75 for the pair including shipping. A lot cheaper than the SanDisk cards.
And the S2 sucks card memory in movie mode, altho the movies are excellent!

If you're in Canada I highly recommend Kingmax - bought from CanadaComputers. I've bought both a 1 and 2 GB card from their series and you can't beat them for bang for buck/performance. The 2GB card frequently goes "onsale" for $39.99 CDN and the 1GB card always sits at $19.99. If you want something larger (and I have no idea about compatibility) you can grab a 4GB card for $79.99. I have had no right speed or reliability with either card (had the 1GB since July and the 2GB since August) as I've taken approx 2000 pictures with both cards and countless video clips (at difference resolutions) and the 1GB I've had full with songs and tossed into my MP3 player at times.

So are you saying that the Transcend card mentioned above works awesome in spite of the memory draw of movie mode? I'm about to buy an S3 and an SD 800 IS and want to take advantage of the continuous shooting and movie modes of both, and the DIGICIII processor of the 800....with the requisite speed...I'm wary of not being able to take full advantage of the performance and speed possible with those cameras by buying an inferior card...

Has anyone tried a 4GB card in their S3? If so how did it go?
Thanks.

Burst mode is more of a load on the camera than high quality movie mode. You don't need a very fast card to keep up with the Canon 640x480 30fps movie mode. My regular Sandisk card can keep up with it, the Transcend is much faster than that.

Most of the memory will work (even the 4Gb one, the theoretical limits is at 127Gb I think)
I have 1x 1Gb Corsair 60X and 1x Kingston 2gb 50X.
Just stay away of the regular Sandisk. Worst SD memory you can buy.

That certainly hasn't been my experience. My regular Sandisks work fine in the SD300 and A530 in all modes. What problems did you have with that card?

VERY slow write and data lost every so and then. Happened to everyone I know.
I talk about the Regular one, made in China. I have nothing against the Ultra or Extreme or the regular one made in Japan.

Definately not my experience. I have two regular SanDisk cards bought from a reputable company. I've used them quite extensively for 18 months in two different cameras with not a single problem. I've never heard of the problems you mention with legitimate Sandisk cards. And for non-high speed cards, they are quite fast.
There have been counterfeit Sandisk cards out there, many sold on eBay or fly-by-night operations. In general, Sandisk and Lexar have the best reputation of any card makers out there. I wouldn't hesitate to buy any legitimate card from them.

I visited Newegg after reading this thread. There's a 2gb Transcend here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820163158
It says 150x speed but what does that translate too? Can someone explane the X speeds? I've seen a Toshiba 1gb at Sams ($41) that writes 20gb per second. How does that compare to 150x.
Will the 150x be fast enough if I'm using the S3 in burst mode?
BTW, I don't own the camera yet, but I'm getting close.

I use a Transcend 4GB high speed card without any problems (NewEgg had a rebate a few months back where the total was under $65 for the card). The card is great because I use the S3 as much as a digital video camera as I do a digital camera.

Anyone have any experience with Transcend's customer service? I was reading the user comments at Newegg. While most of the comments were positive there were several indicating the Transcend goes out of its way to deny rebates and one comment saying Transcend refused to replace the card, even though it has a lifetime warranty.
I'm not too woried about the rebate issue, since there isn't one at this time, though their actions may indicate their attitude towards customer service and the one where they refused to replace the card really bugs me.
I remember having a smart media card ages ago (Lexar, I think) and it went bad. I called Lexar and they replaced it no questions asked and they also recovered images off the defective card and sent me a disc of them at no charge.

Yes, well more than enough speed.

I can't tell you about customer service, but as far as the card goes I've been using a 2GB Transcend with no issues for 8 mths. what's neweggs return policy on this item. They're who I picked mines up from but as stated it was a while ago.

The reason I was asking about Transcend's customer service is because the card has a lifetime warranty and one of the customer comments on Newegg said they refused to replace the card.
There was scant detail to the comment but it does bother me. Two years from the the card can fail, will they back up their lifetime warranty?

Wow, if a company provided me with that kind of service, I'd stick with them, even if it costs a little more. That kind of customer service is rare these days.

If current trends continue, two years from now the replacement cost for that 2 Gig card will be about $2.00. :)
