technical issue...camers like panasonic lx1 and 2 criticised for using ccds with too high resolution for size making noisy images BUT there is the option to reduce resolution . Will reducing resolution to say 5 mp in camera reduce noise effect or is the damage already done?
answers gratefully recieved.

It generally won't make any difference. The Panasonic cameras, for example, get their lower-res images from simply cropping the sensor. So at high zooms, the pixel density is identical no matter what resolution you choose. At 35mm, however, they work a little magic, using the entire sensor and then downsampling the captured image to the chosen crop size. That's how they get "extended zoom" range. I thought this might make some difference vis-a-vis noise, but my limited experiments haven't shown much difference. I don't usually worry about noise much anyway; if I see that it's noticeable, I apply Neat Image to it, and it cleans up very well, still leaving very useable images.

..did think it might be wishful thinking on my part.....and will take a look at noise editing...
