There has been a bit of talk lately about bounced flash. What are your tips and techniques? Do you use it when you can't get fast enough shutter speeds with available light, or are you more liberal with it?

I use mine a lot indoors. Most of the time I have to.

i use flash pretty much everywhere now when shooting people...in and outdoor.

i use a sto-fen omni bounce to diffuse the flash. bounce it usually off the ceiling, but sometimes off the walls. if outside, i just point it directly at the subject. of course i'm no expert either.

Yes - thus the "bible before bedtime" reading. I'm still interested in exchanging what's in my signature for what's in yours.

Ahh ok. I didn't pick up on your little pun. :P

You can exchange my gear for yours if you want to add a huge sum of cash to the pot. I'll just buy new stuff then! :D ;)

My way of bouncing the flash is relatively easy. I have a sunpak 383 auto (for now) so it automatically meters and adjusts the flash output and tells you what to set your aperature at. There are three automatic modes (on the sunpak) with different aperatures for different depth of field options. So what i do is point the thing straight up at the ceiling (provided they're relatively low say... under 15 feet) and then adjust my aperature so everything is properly exposed. The flash may tell me i want an aperature of 5.6 but if i'm bouncing it it might drop a stop or few so i might set it down to 3.5 or 2.8 depending. Once you find a combination that you like and works for the room you're in you pretty much don't have to adjust the settings at all. At least this is how i do it with my sunpak. I'm sure my technique will change when i get my 580 EX in a few months. Good luck.
