Wow! There are some really impressive photos at this site. I've been a published pro above and below water for over 20 years but I'm relatively new to digital.

I used a Nikon D70 with various lenses and stobes both above and below water.

Amazing stuff... I am dying to try underwater digital photography... too bad the water here is freezing cold!

Get a drysuit. You won't even feel the mildly cold water (high 40s, low 50s) that you have in California. I'm not into UW photography, but I do dive in Massachusetts all winter long, down to 180ft deep with water temperatures in the mid 30s and air temperatures below freezing. With the right gear, the cold water is only an issue for your lips and only until they go numb. :)
