View Full Version : Imagine the "S4 IS" - what do you think it might be like?

I like the S3 IS, but I have a feeling Canon will introduce a new model soon with better features and maybe improvements. Let's call it the S4 IS. :)

Seems like Canon updates this series pretty often, so I bet the S4 IS (or whatever they call it) may come out within 3 - 6 months.

What do you think it will be like? Here's some wishes and ideas I have:

1) Brighter 2.5" LCD with at least 200,000 pixels. The EVF also needs much better resolution. MUST still have rotating/twisting screen!

2) Maybe higher megapixel count, but that's no too important. What matters is improving low light and noise performance to be more like Fuji's cameras.

3) Include the movie mode updates of the latest Canon's, like the longer movie files. Keep the format quality, optical zoom during video and the stereo sound.

4) Wide angle. Would love to see the focal range start around 24mm - 28mm.

Any other ideas to add?

i think the "s4" will come out in the spring, cause thats usually when they come out =]

better noise reduction at higher iso levels for sure.

rotating flash head!

an aluminum body.

is it just me, or all the buttons have a different feel to them? as in some press further than others. maybe its just me... but if thats the case, then fix this =)

faster flash recharge time, if possible.

more optical zoom! haha...

better movie file compression... or at least an option for it. 8 minutes on highest quality and largest size on 1gb card is kinda pathetic.

cant think of anymore... but thats what i would like to see =) i probably wont have money to buy it then, so i can just keep dreaming :D

No swivel LCD, slower lens, smaller sensor, higher ISO, higher price.

why no swivel lcd bower?

Because thats what they did to the G7 it just seems logical thats what they are gona do.

It might be bigger though with the same pixels

Yeah, I also fear they might take way the swivel screen like they did on the G7 (a big mistake IMO). I just hope they don't. It's a great, and rare feature among cameras. The G7 should have had it!

on top of the slower lens, they might as well reduce zoom to 10x :p
and oh oh oh i got a good one! use proprietory lithium ion batteries  taboo!

hmm good thought. maybe i should have waitted a few more months. Oh well i am more than happy with the my S3. After having issues with my camera while taking hockey shots (indoor rink), i hope they will improve that part of the camera.

However i doubt i will spend the mony to buy the next version of the S3 line, i will more than likely get a DSLR in the next yr or so.

I expect the S4 in March 07. My wish list: Smaller size, lower price, MPEG video, On button instead of the switch, better playback switch, less noise. In other words, like an A710IS with more zoom.

Does the G7 have a smaller sensor than the G6? I think they are both 1/1.8".

NOOOOO!!!! that sould be bad very bad.

Design the S4, do a small run of them so the stores can stock them and people can see all the features that have been robbed off it. Increase the run of the S3 and increase the price. :D

I dont know if the G7 has a smaller sensor after everything else they removed i wouldnt be suprised.

Thats because of the slow AMD processing power, if they would use intel power it would not lag. :p :D

they cant afford Intels.. way too much money to get rid of a seconds worth of lag ;)

1) Better low-light capability. The Sony products are far superior for this. No reason Canon can't do it.
2) Use MPEG movie compression for far greater capacity than AVI.
3) New firmware for S2 IS that includes above 2 features!

Hopefully RAW support.

And please keep the swivel LCD. It is GREAT for certain shots.

It's probably been mentioned other places here... but there probably won't be a model called the S4. Four is an unlucky number in most of Asia... sort of like 13 in the USA. I suspect it will be called the S5 instead.

Anyway, my wishlist for the S5 (basically in order of desire):

x. Manual focus ring, preferably mechanical. I don't care as much about a manual zoom ring, but add it if you want.

x. Drop Motion-JPEG in favor of MPEG-4, with movies limited only by available memory.

x. Faster processor to get rid of shutter and focus lag, improve shot-to-shot time, etc.

x. Keep AA batteries and swivel LCD.

x. SDHD support.

x. Higher resolution EVF. You can make the outside LCD bigger and higher-res too, but get the EVF right first.

x. 28mm-336mm equiv (still 12x, but start wider). If I need more telephoto, I'll use an adapter... the wide angle is more useful to me. (If you can give us more magnification too, say 15x, without an accessory lens... you'd clean up on the ultrazoom market).

x. Brighter, better quality lens. f/2.8 or better over the whole zoom range. A little sharper would be nice too (aka some of the Zeiss and Leica offerings).

x. Less noise in all ISO settings, especially the upper range. To my eye, the noise in ISO400 is unacceptable, and 800 is utterly unusable. (I'm probably dreaming here... it would cut into DSLR sales).

x. Flash hot-shoe, or at least a flash-sync port.

The camera is almost too small... so if any of the above needs a little bigger case or lens... that's ok with me. I don't even need any more megapixels... 6mp is fine for what I do.

wouldnt that be nice if it was all in a camera.
