View Full Version : Suggestions for first time buyer with Canon double rebate?
I'm watching the Canon rebate coming up about 10 days later, and according to the information on internet, as well as the budget, I decided to go with 30D which has a $200 rebate, if I also buy a lens.
The camera will be used mainly for vacation travels, and portraits for my wife/baby.
Here is my purchase plan, and please provide whatever you think, THANKS :)
(all BH price based, don't want to bother digging other offers)
30D Body Only $1170 - $100*2 = $970
17-40 L $670 - $45*2 = $580
May also buy a 430EX
$235 - $10*2 = $215
Seperatedly, will buy a 50/1.8 for $75

Buy a memory card;)
Other than that you've made some really great choices.
Thanks for the reminding, RichNY !
I'm still hesitating whether I should get the 430EX for now, only 20 bucks off, you know

$20 isn't enough of an incentive to purchase it in my mind.
Now 'needing' an external flash is a horse of another color. Are you planning on taking indoor pictures of people where you are going to want a softer bounced light rather than the harsh flash of a built in?
You've got until January 13th to purchase it so you can start off without it and then go back and pick it up when you realize you need it;)

The 17-40L is a nice choice, its going to be my pick too to double up on rebate. It's a nice lens, not very fast but built like a tank and very nice color for the price. They are offering a shockingly large rebate though whcih makes me wonder if the 17-40 F4L Is is coming :p

Another dilemma for me is something like the flashlight decision: is it worth buying a 50/1.4 instead a low priced 50/1.8 for portrait shooting
almost the same situation here with DR, only 40 bucks off:rolleyes:

What other lenses are you planning to purchase? I'm going the 10-22, 17-55IS, 70-200 f/2.8 IS route. I might also pickup a 100-400 to shoot my nephew running track (my official justification)
hehe, my official justification is to shoot our 4 month baby and the mom ;) This is also the reason that i'm watching the 50/1.4
At this beginning stage, I'm not considering any tele-lenses, those are expensive and if I'm not sure whether I will really use them, I would delay the purchase, maybe another one or two years. But I'm also seriously watching the 10-22, as well as the Tonika 12-24 that has quite some good reviews around. I like to have the wide angle right now because my wife and I loves camping and hiking in national parks, and shooting some views, so I'm sure I can make good use of the wide angles.
Thanks again :)
