Hello all,

I've recently got a fantastic Canon S3 and read many posts recommending the use of an adapter tube and uv filter to protect the lens. I've noticed that with the adapter fitted (58mm) I get slight vignetting on almost all photos with either no zoom or partial/full zoom.

Example:

My question is, do different brands of adapter tube produce different levels of vignetting? The tube I have is one of the cheaper ones from ebay, the build quality is actually very good and appears to be machined well but I've no experience with the more expensive alternatives (but would be happy to buy another if the vignetting was reduced).

Love the camera though, what a good 'un :)

vignetting does not occour with adapters.. only with lens.. unless ur adapter is too long.. but then it wouldnt be vignetting it would be shadowing.. :)

Could be the sides of the filter not the adapter.

Mayb eyou could use a step ring and use a larger filter with the step ring to step it down to 58. Im not sure if it will help though.

Indeed.. try taking some test shots with no uv filter, but the adaptor on. I use the Canon LA-DC58E adaptor. Never had any vignetting.

What filter did you purchase? If it's Opteka, sunpak or several other lower end brands like that, that's probably it.

I had some vignetting when i stacked 2 filters i didnt notice any with one though.

What if you sanded the adapter? sand some of the threads at the end down so it moves the filter in closer to the lens. You would want to zoom out as far as the lens extends then sand it but it almost looks as if you would only need to sand it a little.

It would be a few things, the tube could be to long or the filter is a little thick.

Put some sandpaper on a board and just rub on the paper with the thread side of the tube. Wash it before you try it each time to keep any dust away from the camera.
