Olympus Camedia C-4000

Here at work I use a C-400 for various projects. When I remove the memory card and stick it in a normal card reader it works fine and i can pull images off - no problem.
I never use camera software...
I tried plugging in the camera into the USB port and it shows up as a new drive, but I can't read anything off it. It wants me to put a disk in when in fact there already is a card in the camera.
Is this normal? If I don't want to bring the memory card reader would I have to install the crappy software?

I had the same problem. When you delete pictures from the computer and not the camera this often happens.
I paid a guy on eBay $4 and he fixed my card and warned me not to delte from the computer anymore!! I also got a great deal from him on my Olympus C 4040.
