More detail below.

Budget

flexible, prefer under $400 but would pay more if worthwhile

Size

must be slim and light, would like to be able to carry in a pocket (front pocket ok!) or purse.

Features

Megapixels--probably not doing much blowing up, but sounds like 6000 or 7000 would suffice.

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify) --This is hard. I like close ups, i guess if I don't get the panasonic, the best i can do in a compact is 4x. Any advice on how important this is?

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
9 or 10. I love a really beautiful picture. i'm an amateur though, so maybe that means something different--my hand shakes, so image stabilization is a problem.

Do you care for manual controls?
if you mean focus, no--i'd want it to be automatic. i'm probably not talented enough to work manual controls

General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for? family travel pictures and pictures of kids.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? yes, i'd like to, but so far i haven't

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? yes, i take pictures of the kids all the time, that's why i hate redeye so much. i never have time to fix on the computer.

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? maybe but very low priority.

Miscellaneous
I'm a very inexperienced photographer, would like an easy to use, fast camera that has image stabalization, takes very clear pictures, has good battery life and no redeye. would like compatible program for my pc (not mac) to be easy to use.

Also, we are considering also getting a really good camera for home and event use (but i find that inconvenient to have on the go so want to light compact). Does that lean to having a particular compact that will be compatible in printer, software, etc.

Are there particular brands you like or hate?

Are there particular models you already have in mind?
Canon SD 700 seems to take great pictures but with huge redeye problems and hard to fathom manual.

Fuji finepix F30 seems to reduce redeye but maybe the compatible software not as good? also only 3X compared to 4X.

Can't tell how Sony DCS-T33 compares. Any reason to go to any others instead of the Canon?

the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 is attractive because it's got 10X zoom and image stabilization. how important is 10x zoom. I like close-ups! but will picture quality be as good as the Canon or others at 4x? i'd love some advice on whether the panasonic will overall be as good as a 4x. I have only seen it compared to kodak v610 (which it wins over becasue of image stabilization)

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)

What is ISO--why would you need a picture at high ISO? I assume I need Image Stabilization because my hand shakes.

Thank you so so so much in advance.

have you tried looking into the nikon s10?
-compact - 4.4 x 2.9 x 1.6 in
-has 10x zoom
-has an in-camera red-eye fix
-has an in-camera lighting mechanism to brighten dark images
-vibration reduction (nikon's version of image stablization)
-6MP resolution (enough for up to a 16x20 according to nikon's website)

image quality is good, but you wont know if it's good enough until you try it yourself. it has most of the features you are looking for, so if you can verify the quality of the image to your liking, it might be the best fit for your needs.
