Budget:
I'm looking to spend less than 400 CAD. I don't have a specific limit, so I could go higher if it's a good investment, but I am all about getting good deals. Don't want to overspend just because I have the means (at least temporarily).
Size:
Don't need a tiny one at all.. it's not too important. Something midsize like the canon a620 is what i'm probably looking for.
Features
How many megapixels will suffice for you?
I'm thinking i want 6 or more. 5 could work in a pinch.
What optical zoom will you need?
4x should be good, so standard.
How important is “image quality” to you?
8 or 9 I guess. I don't know what to compare it to, though.
Do you care for manual controls?
Yes. I want to have flexibility. I don't know how to use them now, but I want the option to learn how to take my photographing to the next level, as it were.
General Usage
What will you generally use the camera for?
Both taking random pics of mates and surroundings and some artisticy sort of photographing.. outdoor, and indoor. travel and leisure. I am a bit of an artist at heart and involved in some local sorts of things, so that I know I'll be wanting to explore that side of me at times, whereas other times it will be more practical/fun stuff.
Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
It's likely, eventually. depending on what big means. I'd like to have the option to get really good 8.5 x 11s at least.
Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?
quite likely, I'd definitely like to be able to get some good evening/night sort of shots (i'd probably get a tripod for this if i became serious about it though)
Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
Less of a concern; i'd like a rig that can handle it to a certain extent but it's not a big deal.
Miscellaneous
Are there particular brands you like or hate?
Nope. I want something durable though.. to last me a good while.
Are there particular models you already have in mind?
I've been looking seriously at the Canon PowerShot A620. Looks like it has what I need. It seems to be discontinued, though, and while people on ebay have it I don't know if I should get one there, largely for the issue of not having the warranty apply outside of the states. Curious to know how concerned I should be about this.
(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)
I'm not sure if I want image stabilization because I haven't experienced it myself. it seems like it could be useful.. but it's not a priority at all.
If I could get one that can shoot good quality (more concerned with fps than resolution probably) that would be also excellent.
