I had a Minolta dimag400 and could never quite figure out how it worked, I could take pics but diddent have a clue as to what all the fancy modes were. The instruction manual was one of those shiney beer coaster things that you put in a computer so I could not carry it around with me. All my other cameras were throwaways. So I have been looking at the A 710. Is it user friendly for guys like me with no real working knowlage of digi cameras?

Well i have the A700 and IMO its just like all the other powershot cameras. One thing i like about canon is that since ive been into cameras every canon camera ive tried all have the same opperating system. There is a dial at the top and you just turn that for all the shooting modes. A few are setup for new users to get you going quick (auto and P) mode. Once you get bored with that then you can get into the tweaks and really start screwing up pictures. lol
They are fun cameras, ive had fuji, and sony and i like the way the canons work. Sony is my favorite electronics all my stuff is sony but i had to go with canon for digital cameras because of how quick and easy they were to use and operate. The menus flow really nice and once you learn one camera upgrading to a better model is an easy change over. All the basic functions are always the same but each camera just adds a few more or less functiosn here and there.
I started with an A70 because there are alot of used ones on e-bay cheap. The a70 is very basic if you want and can get really technical if you want. I started there and then went to an A510, then to an A85 then an A60 sold all those got an S2 now i have about 5 canon cameras and they are all very similar.
The A700 i like because its got the 6X zoom in a small little P&S, its got a nice big screen and it has the grid to help compose the shot. Right out of the box using auto ot P mode will take some good shots. It has a scene mode that lets you chose some other preprogramed modes similar to auto but setup for like indoor, night, fireworks, pets stuff like that. Those are the modes that help you get the best exsposure for the different lighting situations.
Another thing canon is good about is the manual is little. Its almost pocket size, it fits good in a purse or a coat pocket (4"X5") this is good when your out for quick reference.
Canon camera hold their resale value also so if you get one you wont have any problems getting rid of it.
