hello,
my old camera was dimage Z1 before I changed to D70
and I like the zoom capability of Z1 (which is 10X optical zoom, i'm not sure about the focal lenght) and would love to have that kind of zoom with my D70
so, after spending hours on internet searching for the zoom lenses
I found Tokina 24-200mm AT-X 242 AF for $260 !!
but not sure if it is compatible with D70 or not

any advice would be greatly appreciated!

The Tokina 24-200 seems to be a well accepted lens from the write-ups. I am using a Sigma 18-125 which I like very much, but that's because I shoot a lot of wide angle and like having a 27mm bottom end (vs. 36 for the Tokina). It should work fine on the D70.

Hey for $260, and with the positive comments I have seen (no negatives) I would have to say give it a try. AND let us know what you think.

ok now that I was just about to click checkout the tokina 24-200mm
I thought I'd read the review in this forum one more time and I saw
70-300mm AF Nikkor
and I checked the price ($130) now i'm stuck and can't decide what I want

however, I do feel that the tokina 24-200mm produce better quality than the nikkor. so the question is how bad is the nikkor? maybe a pro might just overlook this camera because of its price and mybe the quality also. but im not a pro and i think i can compensate a little about a picture not being perfect :o

what you guys think?

The 70-300 Nikkor G (I have one for long shots) will work fine as a take along (but not day-to-day). Picture quality is not the best at large apertures, but it works ok in the f8 plus range. Just keep in mind that this lens is not for close objects as is the 24-200 or an 18-125. Tamron has a lens coming out this spring that spans the 18-200 range so that might be interesting as a day-to-day lens as well.

But for an everyday lens you want something in the 18 or 24mm wide angle area, so the Tokina sounds pretty ideal and will give you greater telephoto range of your old A1 with a little less wide angle (28-200 A1 vs 36-300 D70).

Another great walk around lens to consider with a pretty good reach is the Nikon 28-200G ED (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/28200g.htm). Great image quality, quick focus and nice and small and light.
