Flash for 8800 (Need Help)

I'm thinking of adding an external flash to my 8800. Will this eliminate redeye in indoor shots? Also, can anyone make suggestions on which flash to purchase? Is there limitations to using an external flash that are specific to my 8800? Is buying a used flash a bad idea? Also, is it a bad idea to buy a non-Nikon flash for the 8800? Any help would be greatly appreciated as well as buying sources. I am somewhat of a newbie, so go easy on me. :)

I'm also looking for a flash, but for the 8400. Is there a good generic equivalent for the SB-600?
