And that is without lenses... Only makes sense if you have a collection of Leica lenses to match.

there is the usual Leica waiting list for M8, established even before anyone had even seen the thing. So you will have plenty of time to fill your cookie jars. Typicaly Leica glass sellls for many thousands of dollars

We won't be reviewing the M8 here at the DCRP

So no review here - sad to hear this because I would have like to read what Jeff has to say about this camera - not in terms of performance and so on (a Leica is not ment to be the perfect toy for sport photography) - but just to satisfy my plain interest in things I adore but can not afford :D

I almost bought a Leica R camera some time ago. It was a beautiful camera although fragile. Instead I got Nikons at the time. I think I did the right thing.

I did consider getting a secondhand M4P to do mountain climbing but didn't due to a lack of mountains nearby. I did however get a couple of Russian FEDs which were copies of the 1930s Leica III. I only took a couple of rolls of film with each before I went digital though.

To be honest, if I was mountain climbing now then I would definitely look at the M8. I would also think hard about the Sony R1. I'm wondering whether the Leica M series is coming to the end of the road.

I suspect Leica film cameras wont be manufactured too much longer. Leica was in the deepest difficulty a few years back and came very close to going under, it was digital business that dug them out. As old aquaintances be forgot, the writing is on the wall for film if Leica is to survive. Could be that it is left to M8 to continue the tradition of 'reportage' cameras for the new Bresson's, Capa's etc.

I suspect film cameras in general will slowly slide out of use, followed by film. Already the people that made film are beginning to suffer from the advances of digital. Agfa-Gaevert went under a few years ago. Agfa was always the best film for colour and for black and white. In fact, the original Baron von Munchausen was filmed on Agfa film.
