I have a client who owns a Sony DSC-P10 and has asked me to figure out why his camera no longer connects to his computer via plug 'n play with a USB cable. Apparently, the camera previously was recognized by windows XP pro and "automatically" opened the camera/scanner wizard so that he could follow the prompts to download his pictures. Now, I realize that he could save his camera battery and just insert his memory card from the camera into his card reader (which BTW does work just fine). But, he doesn't want to do it that way. Since he's the client, I need to find out how to fix this. It appears that what changed on his computer was that he installed Microsoft's XP Service Pack 2 (without asking me first to tell him not to!). That seems to be the only event I can find that might have suddenly changed how his camera interacts with his computer. But, naturally, after doing the uninstall of that SP2, the same problem still exists. When I plug in the camera via the USB cable, the system recognizes the addition of basically the memory card, but not the actual camera. When I attempt to detect it, nothing can be found. I've re-installed the sony driver (which is sort of a generic for all sony cyber-shot digital cameras) but that doesn't help either. I've thought of removing all references to that camera found in the registry of the computer, but I'm not sure that's a good move (or if any entries will be found). Does anyone have any suggestions that I might try?
Thanks.
Linda

if the system detects the memory card, is it showing up as a removeable drive? it sounds like your client wants to use the software to deal with photos... so isn't it possible to start the program/wizard manually and retrieve the photos that way if the system can see the memory card?

perhaps you can do some sort of system restore to a date before he installed sp2? installing these things usually prompts you to create a back up, but i'm guessing he chose not to do this ;) this is probably out of the question, but maybe a fresh reinstall of xp and the camera software would be the most painless way to set things right :p
