Steve, Thank you. Yup pretty much as you said it. The key is to make it interesting with nice composition and color/light blend :)

Alright.. here's my submission! First the submission then the original and all the EXIF.
http://static.flickr.com/92/248762699_79d99ac752.jpg
Alright, here's the original and exif. Then the explaination of what i did to it.
http://static.flickr.com/88/248811526_b2c4a3f308.jpg
Camera: Canon PowerShot S3 IS
Exposure: 0.025 sec (1/40)
Aperture: f/3.5
Focal Length: 60.5 mm
Focal Length: 2, 6050, 230, 173
Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV
Flash: 80
I dunno why it says flash: 80. flash was not used and normally it says "did not fire"
ANYWHO.. as you can tell, it is obviously cropped. I used a 5x7 aspect ratio template to crop the photo vertically.
I then used the "auto adjust" feature under COLORS in "Microsoft Office Picture Manager" and clicked on the grey parts of the blinds. (you click on an object that SHOULD be white and it will auto adjust the colors. I think it may be similar to levels in photoshop, but i'm not sure. And then.. voila. picture. A little purple fringing, but i don't have a way to rid a pic of that.
Hope you enjoy! Comments and Critiques, questions etc. ALWAYS WELCOME!
EDIT: the option is called "enahnce color" but it works the same way i said already.
downtrodden
09-20-2006, 10:49 PM
I'd also like to submit this one. I did not save the original, However, it recieved the exact same treatment. Only this time a 4x6 template and cropped horizontal, not vertical.
http://static.flickr.com/89/248743119_eac4c525e1.jpg
Camera: Canon PowerShot S3 IS
Exposure: 0.04 sec (1/25)
Aperture: f/3.5
Focal Length: 72 mm
Focal Length: 0, 0, 0, 250
Exposure Bias: 0/3 EV
Flash: 80
Now, i know about the purple fringing- i can't remove that because i do not have any decent editing software. However, any other Comments or Critiques would be appreciated!!!

Karl, Jolibee is pretty much no.1 here in the Philippines. As they say here "kuha nila ang lasang Pinoy" They nailed the taste of the Filipinos. Their regular Hamburgers ( regular yums) taste better than Mc's regular hamburgers but they dont have anything to match the Quarterpounder and McChicken burgers of McDonalds. :)
I love the Jolibee Chicken Joys ( Chicken n rice) also :)

Bower64 - Noiseware seems to do a great job, it has many presets, I used Full Supression - Stronger Color setting on yours. Some soften more than others, some lose detail... play with it and I think you will like it. It works great for ISO200 and above photos.
The Pro version has batch processing which is great. My sister-in-law went to Punta Cana island and shot 700+ photos using a Sony P52 but had the setting on ISO400 the whole time. Shots were full of noise so I batch processed them through Noiseware Pro. Took about 1.5 hours total and they came out very nice. It can save you sometimes!

Wow, everyone is doing great shots. turner2000 the Angel of the North looks better in your picture than I've seen it in real life. Of course I've only seen it from the motorway, and your shot looks like it wan't from the motorway :D .
I've sorta cheated on this shot. I took a picture of a picture. I took take the original a few years ago when I was in California, but I only had a film camera then. I haven't really had a chance to get out and take pictures, so I decided to have a try of taking a picture of a picture.
I took this picture in Tv, with a shutter speed of 1/8. I also had the vivid effect on.

I have a question... For these PCT challenges, should we be posting only new pics, taken during the challenge period, or can we post old pics that fit the category?
I haven't had time lately to get out to take anything new... but I have some older ones that fit.

you can use older ones... but i think it is encouraged to post new ones so people can go out and actually use their cameras.

Also, I forgot, and a lot of others did as well, to post the EXIF data. I will edit my post in a minute. The EXIF data is how I learn, so we should try to keep up with the original idea of these PCT challenges and post EXIF.

Any Pic is acceptable...
This challenge will end this Saturday on the 30th all forth coming challanges will encompass a two week time period. This change is taking place to allow sufficient time for participants to complete the challenge.
Gentlemen, I know it takes extra effort but please post the exif data it's a crucial part of the process.
It would be nice if a pro or two would help out with comments and critiques. I'll send out a couple of invites and see if I can get any takers.

Hey Xailo, one request about the invite thing though.. please make sure it's someone who's not so snobbish or grandiouse as some of the "pros" i've seen around here. It is a learning experience this challange, and being blasted about a picture will demoralize a lot of people. Just something to keep in mind.

Here is my attempt for this challenge. Can anyone guess what's in the photo? ;)
I did quite a bit post processing on it (hope it's still OK to enter...):
Adjusted the gamma level to make it darker
Sharpened it
Cropped it and
Resized it
So the exif-data might not be that interesting anymore? Still, I'll include it.
Here is the photo after all the post processing:

This tree silhouette was taken this summer. In my mind, I wanted a picture of just the tree, but it was taking me awhile to get it right as I was standing on a floating boat dock, which was drifting up and down. In the meantime, these kids got in the frame looking for minnows. While I was waiting for them to leave, I realized "Hey, I like them in there!"

I've been sick lately so I didn't get to compose anything new for this. So I'm submitting the only shots I have that are close. Not great but will have to do. These were taken in August about two and a half hours apart.
I guess I shot this one in Auto mode. 1/1600 at F/4.

This one was in Manual mode. 1/30 at F/3.5. ISO 100.

It's at sunset but the sun was a little high and the Hoya UV filter I have attached reflect some 'rainbow effect' or something like this when I shoot direct to the sun. (I think is the silver ring of the filter).

Time to reveal the correct answer to my little challenge within the challenge!
Maybe you thought it was impossible to guess what kind of PCI-card it is? Well, that was not the case. In fact we do have a completely correct answer!
The correct answer is:
A Supra Express 56i PRO PCI-modem.
http://hem.bredband.net/wesake/Pics/IMG_2120_gamma_corrected_cropped_sharpened_resized .jpg
Congratulations to BowerR64 for knowing the correct answer! You win the forever glory and honour of giving the correct answer to "Wesan's Challenge Within the Challenge Quiz"!

Hi Everyone,
I just got myself an official username b/c I'd really like to post this picture here even though the challenge has been over for a bit...hopefully you'll all allow me to be late and I'll also take a look at the presesnt/future challenges.
I took this on deployment in the US Navy on the USS Enterprise. This is at sunrise time and I got the desired effect by pointing the camera towards the sun, depressing half-way on the shutter to lock in the settings with the brightness of the sun, and then holding that as I shifted the framing of the shot back to where I wanted it. This was taken with my Canon S 50 on July 6, 2006.
I've attached the file, so hopefully it works properly! Thanks in advance for comments/criticism.
iPhoto isn't giving me too much info, but here is what it did tell me:
Shutter: 1/800
Aperture: f 2.8

I've actually taken a bunch of pictures that I've been really happy with by using that "technique". I'm putting this in quotes since it's not an official photography technique that I know of, and wouldn't want to insult a non-novice by refering it to as such. :p
What you're seeing in the picture is the watchstander known as the Forward Lookout. He has on sound powered phones to communicate with the Bridge of the ship if he sees something. Sound Powered phones are exactly what their name implies....powered by the sound of your voice. They're a pretty old piece of technology, but still are great in case of battle damage or power outages...cuz they work by sound and not any other power!
To his right is yes, a spotlight and directly on his left are the "Big Eyes", a fairly high powered set of mounted binoculars. You can just make out the cord for the sound powered phones stretching back from him...

Thank you! It's definitely my favorite picture from that morning, and one of my favorites of the entire deployment. Sadly, I don't even know if my camera does that. I've been meaning to learn more about photography for a long time now, but didn't really have the time/resources to do so. So, I just kept playing with the camera and trying different things out. Now that I'm seperated from the Navy, I'll have more time on my hands. I'm looking at getting an S3 IS to have a little more freedom and also to be able to use the mega zoom. There were several times on that deployment that I couldn't get the shot that I wanted to b/c of the limited zoom. The biggest things I worked on were practicing holding the camera still for shots that should really have been taken with a tripod (didn't have one for most of the deployment).
I tend to drive people a little nuts with how many pictures I take, but then again one of my friends just stopped taking her camera with her on our port calls and instead asked for copies of mine. :D
The other thing that bugged me about this S50 was that it wasn't realllllly small enough to put in my pocket comfortably, so had it in it's case, inside my backpack...wasn't the fastest method in the whole world, especially if it was a shot that I'd miss if I didn't move fast enough to pull it out. Also, I tended to not leave the battery in the camera b/c I was afraid it'd drain it. (Is that accurate, btw? Or do those batteries drain just by sitting around whether they're in the camera or not?) So, I'm also looking at getting either the SD700 IS or the SD800 IS for the pocket portability and to make it a little easier to get the borderline pictures w/o as much time and effort spent retaking the pictures, trying to get them w/o blur.
Do you guys think the S3 is a good choice for someone looking to practice and learn before spending much bigger bucks on a dSLR? Or is there maybe a better choice? I don't feel like I'm ready to have the different lenses and to know when I need to switch them off...
Actually Crew96, it is a photographic technique. btw real nice pic. ;)

The S3 is a great training camera to get your feet wet. The camera allows you to really find yourself in an all inclusive solution from supermacro-superzoom. Manual mode and some custom options give you a small feel for what it will be like in the dSLR world. hth just look at some of the pictures you find here it's hard to argue that with some talent that this camera won't perform. highly recommended even when I get a dSLR I'm not going to get rid of this one. ;)

Awesome! Thanks for the advice. I had a feeling based on other posts I've seen from you that you'd recommend this camera in general, just wasn't positive that it fit my exact situation...I have looked at lots of the pictures from it and have been quite impressed! I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get one, esp with the number of times I was a bit frustrated that I didn't have nearly enough zoom to get the picture I wanted with the S50.
Thoughts on the SD700 IS/SD800 IS to have a quick ready to go in the pocket camera (esp. for when I go somewhere that I can't set the camera down when I'm not shooting)? I've been reading posts all over the place from here, Cnet, dpreview, etc on issues with corner sharpness and barrel distortion...I think I'm willing to make some of those sacrifices for the small camera, but still waffling a bit on the 800 instead of 700. I've also read several posts on comparing the two, but don't feel like I have enough info yet on deciding between one or the other...I'm not interested in the 900 b/c I just don't need that many mega pixels...don't see myself printing photos larger than 8X10, and even that would likely be rare...

As Xailo pointed out, it's a legitimate technique. Many people meter or lock focus in one spot and then recompose. I believe it shows promise for your photography that you were able to independently discover it.
I'm not sure you can cheat at photography, however. Unless you talk to those people who think Photoshop is cheating. :)

Wow. Thanks. =)) You guys are going to give me a big head. =)
I guess what I meant by "cheating" :) was that I was manipulating the shutter speed, etc in an automatic mode w/o enough photography knowledge to have been able to create the same effect in a manual mode...I only have VERY minimal knowledge on how the different settings create the effects...I played with the auto mode until I had tricked it into the settings I wanted, but wouldn't have been able to dial those settings in myself, even if the camera had the capability... If I had let the camera do what it wanted when I pointed at the watchstander, it wouldn't have been a silhouette on him and would have blown out the sunrise...another reason why I've gone to totally digital photography, since it gives me a real-time look at how the pic will turn out esp. when before it was about getting a good shot rather than experimenting...I'm very interested in learning how to do it myself, hence the pending S3 purchase...
I don't have photoshop...am planning on picking up aperture 1.5 here in the next few days as another guy I talked to who has mucho experience with Mac's said he wasn't that pleased with photoshop on a Mac and liked Aperture a lot more. I was waiting for 1.5 b/c the guy at the Mac store was of the opinion that it would perform a little better on my G4 PowerPC processor...more universal than the previous edition that I think was aimed more at the Intel chip folks...

You'll get there. I shot in P mode for the longest time. Later I figured out a few spots to use the Tv and Av modes. Then I got my XTi three weeks ago. When I took it out for the first time I forced myself to shoot in Manual mode for every shot. It's a good learning experience if you have the discipline for it. I have a ways to go still but I'm farther along that before. Buy or check out from the library "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson. It explains the relationship between aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to get the exposure you want. It's helped me a lot.

Forcing myself to use manual is where I want to get...I'll have much more time now to do stuff like that as no more Navy deployments, so it's def. on my list of things to do to practice.
Thanks very much on the recommendation of the book....hard to judge which ones are the best ones since the publisher is always going to hype up the book. I remember some books mentioned in a diff. thread and planned to go back and note the titles. Thanks for saving me the searching effort! :)
I'm gaining a better understanding of what they all do...now putting it into practice.... :)

Didn't know much about the 800 until I just looked it up. You should read Jeff's review here (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_sd800-review/index.shtml) and check out his list of what's new. Note that while they're both essentially 4x zooms, the 800 doesn't have as much reach, because/although it's wider. So if you prefer wide angle shots to having a little more telephoto reach, then the 800 sounds like the way to go. To me, the only reason to get the 700 is for the price break and the extra zoom if that's what you're into and didn't have another camera to cover it. If I were making my decision today, I'd definitely get the 800. I'm a little bitter since I got my 700 in July for $500 and now the 800 is out and only $400. Ha ha.

=) I had read his review and then was also looking in other forums and sites, and I've seen some comments on the 800 not being as well constructed, and having big issues with the battery door...looking like it will break....prompted some of them to go back and get the 700 instead...highly subjective, obviously...I don't see a .2 difference in the zoom being that big of a diff, so not a deal breaker, and I'm planning on getting an S3, so will have another option for zoom...I was wondering if you had looked at the 800 since you had the 700, just for one last opportunisitc question on the comparison. :) I'm gonna get the 800. Thanks for your input. =) Re-reading Jeff's review has convinced me to ignore the other posters comments on the build as lots of others have said it's fine. I had already decided on the 700 and was just waiting on enough cash to get it when all of a sudden the 800 came out! Hence the hesitation...Sorry if this rubbed salt in the wound!

Is it a Canon made case? Is it small enough that it still slides nicely into your pocket when it's in that case?
I read the thread about memory card bottlenecks, but that poster was talking about a camera with the DIGICII, and since this has the DIGICIII...several posters talked about how all the II processor needed was such and such of a card and write speed...anyone know what memory card and speed I'll need to take advantage of the continuous and video modes and upgraded processor...? I'm asking for both the 800 and for the S3 IS since I'm planning on getting both...

My case is the Canon one. It fits the camera and that's it - no room for an extra battery or memory card, but that's fine with me. If you need something a bit larger, you can check out cases from another manufacturer. I don't believe I've tried it with jeans, but it fits easily into shorts and slacks pockets. You notice it about as much as a wallet.
anyone know what memory card and speed I'll need to take advantage of the continuous and video modes and upgraded processor...? I'm asking for both the 800 and for the S3 IS since I'm planning on getting both...
I'm not a memory card expert, but I relatively fast cards (Extreme IIIs) if only because it doesn't take as long to transfer images to my laptop. A card's speed is more than just how fast a camera can write pictures to it. I can't answer your specific question though.
