As I said in my post yesterday, I am pretty settled on purchasing a Nikon D80. The thousand dollars cost basically shoots my budget so I am wondering if I can use my 35-105 Nikkor AF lens from my old N4004 camera. What are your thoughts on this? Will I notice any quality difference using this as opposed to buying a new lens. I am a newbie to the DSLR world so please please use layman's terms and explain any lingo. I really appreciate your time helping me out with this. Also, I have some older pre AF lenses (Nikkor) such as the 55 mm micro and a 28 mm wide angle and a 105 portrait lens. Since these are not AF how would this affect my photo taking using the new D80? Would I even be able to use them? Again, many, many thanks for everyone's help and opinions.

p.s. Rich...for some reason my email keeps rejecting your email to me. It says that I am only using 3% of my email space but then it tells me that I don't have enough room to accept yours. My laptop that I usually use for my email is down right now so I have been using other computers in the house to pick up my mail. Thanks so much for trying though.:)

Your 35-105 will work alright. But 35mm is not very wide just take that into account. 35 x 1.5 = 52.2, 105 x 1.5 = 157.5.

So if you can, get the 18-55 kit lens with it, that will give you relatively inexpensive wider angle possibilities of quite good quality.

Why it is problematic using manual focus lenses on a D80 I do not know exactly, but they can not meter with those older lenses, whicgh is a bother. And that is strange, because if you would buy a Canon Xt or something and an adapter for those Nikon lenses, the Canon CAN meter with them mounted.

As far as I understand the D200 is the cheapest Nikon DSLR that can meter with those older AI/AIS lenses.

I just recieved my D80 from Ritz camera a couple days ago, and am thrilled with it. I paid 1099 shipped with the Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 lens. It seems to be a pretty decent lens, especially considering its cost. I would say the lens is worth every penny.

You can see a few pics I have taken already(they have been sized down to 800x600 though) HERE (http://corndoggy.chakra-jewellery.com/D80/)
