I cropped
But that is ok, I am just an amateur:cool:
EF 70-200 f4 L @ 200mm, ISO 200, 1/200 sec, f4.5, with 1.7x tele conv.
How am I going to convince cw to send his 180mm macro to me?

Wow! Awesome shot. But please don't tell me you able to handhold that baby. Tripod right?

Handheld alright... at 200mm and a 200 x 1.7 x 1.6 = 544mm macro at 1/200 sec no wonder I often get soft results
I have yet to buy a compact and light tripod... and I do not see myself often using it with nature macro shots, since setting up the tripod will be a big bother!

Doesn't the rule of thumb actually include the crop factor, so you need 1/320 to get acceptably sharp results? Not that I follow that rule either though. :p

Yes, so with these 2 crop factors (1.6 + 1.7 from TC) I should be using 1/500 sec at least. Not too shabby for 1/200 sec :o

Well that was kind of my point. Very impressive for 1/200 sec. :)
Cropped and handheld? I'm telling! :p
Eddie! Eddie! Coldy cropped a picture! And he didn't use a tripod!

I'm trying to figure out why the exposure was what it was. . . were you shooting M? Reason I ask is I think you could have gotten away with a faster SS here. 1/500 faster? maybe, don't know for sure but most everything of interest is over exposed here. I am just curious to know if it was the cameras meter or you that made the choice. I really like the flowers, I'd like to see them exposured properly, even the bee is over exposed. Great idea though - and thats a tough shot, I've tried it many times, very difficult.
Just MHO.

I don't think it is overexposed though. The sun hitting those flowers the way it did just made them very bright, and the photo shows that. Look at the shadow parts, they are not strangly light, still shadowy with enough detail.
I guess I am not from the school of thought that says that every blown highlight says over expose, just over lighting by the sun (that is where sunglasses come in...). And I want to capture that how it is, not make it darker so all highlights are toned down.
There is something else going on here though. Some flowers give sensors a REALLY hard time, and I do not know why yet. my guess is that it is UV that is part of the flowers's colour to attracks insects. The way this shows itself is that the colour of everything is faithful, except from the flowers. In reality they are more bleu-ish purple than the photo shows. And the "glow" from the flowers is also an effect of that. My S30 would have had an even bigger problem with flowers like these, making them look white and really over exposed.
Strange thing is that I have not read anywhere about this phenomenon....
Here is the uncropped pic, you can better see why it was metered the way it was.

It's too bad there's some blurring around the back of the bee and it's legs... but it's a really nice shot. For handholding the camera, that's amazing. I love the colors and composition on the crop.

Jeez - you guys have a lot of time on your hands. It's funny though that guy got banned and the thread closed. Never seen that on dcresource.
andy - coldmountain's exposure looks spot on to me. Blown highlights are just part of the game (esp. with direct sunlight) with these limited DR digital sensors we're all using (right christian? :p )
coldman - I've noticed that color-crippling many times on digital cameras. There's something about the wavelength of pink-purple-reddish light that the sensors can't handle. Not only is the color wrong but the detail tends to blow out. I'm sure a 16bit medium format digital back would do much better. But in our little 8-12 bit APS-C world, we're doomed when it comes to a pink petunia. :(

Coldrain,
You hypothesized that there may be some UV messing up the colors. Have you tried taking two identical shots with and without a UV filter? I think that would tell you whether the UV is messing up the sensor or if the colors themselves are hard to capture.
I may have to try this myself.
Also, great shot.
