Ok guys, I've read and thought. Somehow I still cannot make up my mind on which lens(es) I want to get. I ordered a tamron 17-50 f/2.8 but it was a nikon so i sold it to my friend. I would like to have similar range as that to go with my 30D. But I love wide angle shots so I am considering the canon 10-22. The Tokina 12-24 is also in there.

So here are my options as I see it, maby you can help.

1- Canon EF-S 10-22 f/3.5-4.5

or

2- Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 + Tokina 12-24 f/4

I wonder how much I would enjoy the extra 2mm on the canon?

Quality wise, per the photozone.de site, the canon is not that impressive.

What do you guys think?

Both are great lenses, I've used the Canon 10-22mm and I hear great reviews of the Tokina 12-22mm. I believe the Tokina is about $200 cheaper than the Canon. I don't know how that affects your budget but maybe it's something to consider. I can not personally tell you which one is better so I suggest going into a store and actually mounting them on your body and seeing first hand which you favor.

The Tamron could be used with either the Canon or Tokina. Is there a reason you only listed it with choice #2?

I'm about to make that same choice but I'm leaning towards the Tokina. In this particular case nobody has pointed me to any quality difference so I'd rather spend the extra $200 on something that will be more meaningful.

I was in the same dilemma, and ended up with the Tokina 12-24. If I were to do it again I would buy the canon 10-22. My friend just got it and the axtra 2mm makes a difference. Also, the Canon has USM so the focus is accurate and quiet. The Tokina has a hard time focusing in low light and is noisy. Image quality I think is about the same for both though...with the Canon getting a slight edge in my eye. Either one is a good choice though.

I have the 10-22 and my opinion is that it is overrated - "L" quality IQ my butt!!! :D That doesn't mean it's a bad lens though.

So, if it doesn't hurt you to spend a bit more to get it, then the question is probably moot (unless you have a particular affinity to some brands, or if you want to get the Siggie 12-24 so it also works on your FF body, and which has HSM, btw).

As for the extra 2mm, it's probably one of those things where 99% of the time you'll be able to take the steps back and 1% of the time you'll kick yourself for not having gotten it.

It's a rough decision, there are as many reasons not to get one as there are reasons to get one.

The reason for putting it with the Tokina is for a few hundred more bucks vs. the Canon, i could extend my range alot with some decently good glass.

Describing the Tokina 12-24 f4 as loud with its AF is wrong, for a non-USM motor it is very silent and people in you vicinity hardly can hear it.

Of course USM is totally silent. Take into consideration with your choice that you have to also order the hood with the Canon. Both are very good lenses.
