well, here is my unscientific results... it appears to be sharper in spot metering than in matrix metering.. so that makes me feel much better..
when all was said in done my onboard flash was +1EV...hence brightness!!

this sheet was printed on my canon ip2000 so letters look blotchy anyway.. gunna have to find a better target..... i dont have tripod so i just messed with the two angular shots.. if i was at the wrong angle it looked like front focus was going on.. will grab my friends tripod just to make sure... but sure im fine.

here they are take'em for what theyre worth..

all at approx 3 ft away as the letters were too small to be clear at 17mm and 9ft

Spot metering has nothing to do with focussing though. I do not know the D200, what mode are you using? And what focussing point/mode? Can it be that there is a mode where the focussing points are linked to the metering mode, so that spot metering switches also the focussing to the central sensor?

If so, you better learn how your camera does work with certain settings.

And of course... you do need to be able to matrix meter at times.

On the D200 (and, IIRC, the D70, and probably others), spot metering occurs at the focus control point. In modes using multiple focus points (dynamic area AF), it uses the center point of the set of points used. This is unlike some cameras where the spot meter is only in the center of the viewfinder.

This capability makes it possible to meter and focus on your subject at the same time.

That is very nice... but yet it does not explain why the lens would be sharp when focussing while using spot metering, and not while metering matrix.

That still does not make sense.

I'm not too impressed with the shots, why is the hair so unsharp/course?
