Hi,

I just bought the SD300 and really very happy with it except that I notice some funny noices when it is doing work ie. lens move, metering, etc. It's not the usual motor noice when the lens retract or extract. But it sounds rather like a short-circuit electric charge.

Does anybody experience the same? It's normal? The camera functions well though.

I would say take it back and swap it with another SD300 to see if it makes the same noise. If the noise is still there, then it's just the way the camera works.

Mine occasionally sounds like the lens is retracting, but it doesn't move. Like something is adjusting inside, when I don't touch any buttons for, I don't know, maybe 30 seconds. It does have several features that turn off the display and I don't think it's anything wrong, it's just the way the camera handles it's "power save" period or something.

My ancient G2 makes some quiet noises when I press the shutter halfway while it is focusing. I have had it for 2 years without a problem.

I too just got a SD300, and am very pleased with it. And mine also makes some noises (besides the motor noise). They are like quick clicks that happen when I am either using the zoom (usually right after the motor noise), or about to take a picture (while the camera is focusing). So I think it is normal.

I'm pretty sure every digital elph (s100/s110/s200/s230/s400/s500) i've ever owned or operated has made that sounds. its a pretty loud click (relative to the other sounds). perfectly normal. it also makes that sound when switching from the different preset modes. dont you worry, your camera is functioning properly (from what i can tell).

I just bought an SD200 and I think it makes the same noises that you are talking about. I wouldn't worry about it, I haven't had any problems at all. When I press the shutter button halfway down, it makes the strangest noises, but it is ok. Great camera!

I am having the same exact problem... just e-mailed Canon support about it and will post the response.

Anyway, does anyone own a SD300 which does NOT make this additional sound... Just to characterize the sound more, it sounds as if there is a metal pin scrapping against something else that is metal... but only very briefly. The sound can be heard on power up/down and when focusing. The sound is definitely loud enough to be very noticable by all that are close by!
