Based on the "Sticky Thread", it seems that a good lens to get in place of the "kit" lens is the :
Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5, or
Tamron 17-50 f2.8
Ignoring the fact that one goes to 70mm v 50mm....any comments from those who have tried both lenses on a 350D would be appreciated.

Go ahead and take a gander at this thread (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20550), from not too long ago.
There's also this one (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19872)

I don't think anyone here has tried both lenses, so it is up to you to gather info on both and decide which one you like best. The Tamron offers a constant max aperture, the Sigma more reach and a 1:2.3 macro mode.
That saves you the cost of getting a dedicated macro lens for the time being.

Read those 2 reviews carefully. My preference would go to the Sigma, based on those reviews. But that is personal of course.
