What's the deal with cropping? I've noticed some comments and questions on in some of the threads here, ranging froms sincere to (apparently) tongue in cheek.

Yeah, I must have also missed the joke. What's all this crap about cropping. Sometimes you just have to take a crop. :o

The source of much wisdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll) has an answer for you. In summary, it is starting an argument to start an argument.

Oh, I don't think Ed was that bad.... but I must admit I couldn't sit through reading the entire croping thread so I don't know what he said in there but the other one wasn't that bad. I thought it was intresting. Oh well, and I don't like croping because I'm lazy :p

Occasionally, somebody comes in to troll. There are a few members here that can be antagonistic toward other members. I cannot figure out why. It's more often that we get spammers than true trolls as most people here can spot a troll a mile away.

We recently had a troll posting about cropping and people went nuts so that thread was locked. In fact, a couple of forums (not just DCResource) went nuts about the same time. Lots of people (many not involved in objectionable activities) got chucked off FredMiranda recently (I have a suspicion that that forum is being quietly pruned back to subscribed members only) - mostly without warning.

Anyway, a troll is somebody that comes in to cause a fierce debate that escalates into a "flame war" in which people launch into vicious personal attacks. Each respondant raises the stakes by raising the ire of the person that posted negative statements about them and it all gets quite nasty. Of course - those that post are so wrapped up in the fight that they never step back and ask "why is this person saying this?" If more people did that then more would realise a flame war was starting and would quench the flames themselves.

I don't mind cropping as an aid to perfection but I don't think cropping should be relied upon instead of correctly exposing the photo. For example, I wouldn't shoot everything with a 12mm lens and simply crop to 1,000mm. By then the picture would be less optical quality than a CIF webcam even though the objective would have been achieved.

I try not to crop as I try not to get the exposure wrong. I don't like post processing and don't really care for RAW files. Having said that, at least a RAW file gives me some lattitude to work with.

That is exactly the way I feel too. The least post processing I have to do the happier I am but if I can save a picture by adjusting the brightness or whiteblance it makes it worth shooting in RAW.

It is intresting to hear that other sites are geting the same trolling problems. I am a member of iATN. The largest international automotive technican forum in the world and there was a major case of trolling there. The troller was unsuccesfull at drawing people in to his fight but boy did he try!!

Take care.

If more people did that then more would realise a flame war was starting and would quench the flames themselves.Don't sell the knowledgeable users and truth defenders short. Many feel it is their obligation to challenge mis-information, distortions, lies, gross generalizations, statement of opinion as absolute fact and product commercials. The most recent (and infamous) example went way beyond typical trolling. The OP set out to call into question the work ethic of many members, while in truth it was just a commerical. Members have a right to defend themselves and the truth in a situation like that, however out of hand it may have seemed to have gotten.

I don't know the etymology of "trolling", I just figured it was like fishing.

Every so often someone enters with "I'm a pro, I've written 3 books, you guys are a bunch of amatures, in your face!". At first they claim "I have copyrights to protect" so don't post photos, then they post really amature stuff and that further warms the keyboards.

I'm not trying to open old wounds, just guessing some people (myself among them) felt Ed's subsequent posts qualified, to one degree or another. I think he had a valid point in some respects, but for various reasons a huge arguement ensued so it deserved to get closed.

Anyway; it has provided "cropping" as an inside joke. Sort of like a nickname that sticks.

I'd say I haven't seen trolling so bad in a long time since I stopped reading Usenet, but that was certainly not the worst trolling I've run into, either. I've seen ones where the troll makes multiple alter egos participate in the thread of "discussion"

Nevertheless, it bore forth a signature for my DCRP account and I will be eminently grateful for that. ;)

i think for many of us, if we encountered this sort of thing on our own, we'd probably just brush these dudes aside. there are a lot of newbs reading these pages though so someone's gotta set the record straight or we'd have weirdos like ed brainwashing countless impressionable newbs on the net.

In a sad way. But just imagine the conversation between him and some poor pro trying to submit something to his paper. "... and I don't care if you did catch the police car mid-air, perfectly in focus, startled spectators peering from the underbelly, my guy had to crop so you're fired!".

to the OP: i've heard of everything from questions about post processing, the type of printing process, to some big art organizations regarding digital capture and output as not being photography at all, plus all sorts of other stuff but this was the first time i've ever heard of cropping as an issue. have you ever heard someone express concern over whether the photographer cropped the image or not? i haven't. this is why i told ed to send his message to some well known photogs and other working photogs/artists cuz i know they'll just laugh their heads off

...is still a troll. Interesting stuff guys. I was unfamiliar with the practice of trolling myself until Jeff K. referred to it when he closed the cropping thread. Makes perfect sense though, particularly when you consider that trolls are reborn each time they assume a new identity. Doesn't take much work to setup a page (especially a lame one) on a web host to validate your new identity. Thanks for the insight. :)

Embarassing question (maybe I don't watch enough TV, maybe I'm too new to photography) - what picture are you talking about

I'm off to Google, but maybe someone will beat me with the information...

EDIT: OK, found it - I should have remembered it is time for the networks to cash in with the annual repetition of material...

Oooooh. Got it.

The cuban one was the most replicated photo of all time, amazingly.

Also amazingly; I've never seen this (falling man) photo. A product of no network TV I suppose. Radio, newspaper, mags news for me, .... 1 man boycott of the TV media takeover (just had it with commercials). Thanks for the enlightenment. That photo doesn't let us forget, does it?

I don't believe I'd seen it either (although I'd seen some video). The Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Falling_Man) mentions the media's self-censorship after it provoked an angry response from the American public.

Interesting, I seem to recall seeing the image quite a lot in our local media without fuss.:confused:I guess it was different for people (like me) who were there to watch the horror unfold. Being reminded of it was (and continues to be) very painful. Although, I think any censorship of such images, self-imposed or not, is wrong and wrong...

But, the U.S. media is always all too willing to tow the (P.C.) line...
