for some reason my sd500's mute will turn on by itself. i have also noticed that this only goes on under heavy shooting (changing modes a lot and shooting a lot). is this a known issue or is it just me. how can i fix this

Have you searched the canon sites to see if there is a firmware? maybe there is some firmware fix for it?

When the settings change do all the other settings change?

Also, one thing i notice, each mode has its own menu. Like manual mode has other flash settings in the menu then the auto mode. So maybe each mode you have to set seperate? just a thought.

It says there is an updated firmware maybe this will correct your problem?

http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/pssd500/frm/d1-e.html?

There are warnings about it though, dont do the update unless you have fresh charged batteries or a powersupply. It can hose your camera if the unit fails during the update.

It erases the memory or the bios of the camera and then replaces it. If your camera fails during any part of the process its junk.

dono if its worth the risk or not?
