well after much debate i bit the bullet and ordered up... i have been unhappy with my group shots with my sigma 18-200mm.... my big debate was between the 17-50 or the 28-75 , I WANT more reache, but likely NEED width more ...after much research i feel the 17-50 would be a better fit as i could crop a bit tighter if need be, but if i need to go wider and cant i am pooched..

i really wanted nikon, but at $1799, the Tamron is a better buy at $479

i imagine the nikon focuses faster as well, but does anyone know how much?

suggestions/comments welcome

The Tamron will focus quite fast... don't worry. It can show up shortcomings in the D200 AF system though, sometimes focus is not totally correct according to some review. But, I think you will have no problem with it.. it seems a fine lens for the price.

Just curious, did you consider the Sigma 18-50 2.8?

Now here's something interesting. Take a look at the MTF tests at photozone.de between the nikon and tamron. Don't look at the which one is higher, but look at the behavior throughout the different focal lengths. To me this hints that they're pretty much the same lens except for the coating and focusing mechanism.

I've never tried the Nikon 17-55, but the AF focusing on my Tamron 17-50mm is plenty fast for me. It's definitely not slow at all. Also, what you'll want to consider when making choices between the two lenses is the color that they reproduce. On the Tamron it's a warmer color, and on the Nikon it's a cooler color.

Grats on the new lens. The Tamron should be all that the Nikon is and perhaps (ghasp) a bit more. Have tried them both and actually liked the Tamron better.

Canon has the issue with 3rd party lenses. What with unhappy customers having to return brand new DSLR's back to Canon for re-calibration? go figure!

Why do you misquote me? That is a bit weird to say the least.
And who do you actually know that has a 30D that had problems with the AF so it needed calibration?

Your post seems like a flame to me. Or deliberate trolling.

And before you counter with some lame accusations:

The lens has no internal AF motor and relies on a slotted drive screw operated by the camera. However, due to a very short focus path (about 45 degrees) the the AF is very fast. AF accuracy wasn't overly impressive on the D200.

Not a flame or trolling... just what I have observed from 30D users. Just trying to keep things in perspective... just as you nitpick at D200 flaws, the 30D has them too! don't get all worked up over this coldy!

Don't be lame Esoterra.

1. This thread is about the Taron 17-50 f2.8. The poster asked about it in connection with a D200. I give very valid information. You can verify it yoruself as I quoted the source. If you feel it is a cheap shot at a Nikon camera you seriously have a problem.

2. What posts have you seen about 30D's needing re-calibration. Please show what you are dribbling about.

Just because I have a Canon does not mean I can not give information on a Nikon forum. Don't become a 2nd timmciglobal. He begins accusing me of the same anti Nikon nonsense when I said that the 105mm Nikkors are not the best macro lenses.

I never hear you guys accuse me of slashing Canon when I advice people to not consider a Canon EF 17-85 IS USM for instance. Or when I say that my 18-50 f2.8 EX DC Sigma focusses quite crap on my EOS 350D. Why is that?
And why are you not jumping up and down when I advice someone to buy a Nikon D50? That surely shows some blatant Olympus bashing?

I really think I am allowed to point out that the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 SP Di II shows a problem with the D200's focus system. Just as an important factor for the person who is considering buying this lens for his D200.
