Jeff has this comment on the main page of the site,
"Nikon D80, Pentax K100D galleries updated
Not thrilled with their mediocre kit lenses, I grabbed my Nikon D80 and Pentax K100D and some prime lenses.."
It will be interesting to read what comments are made about the kit lens when the review appears.

I think he's reacting more to the fact that some readers would express criticism regarding the evaluation of image quality based solely off the kit lens. I have to side with both Jeff and the readers. While the readers are very right that basing a review off the kit lens makes it incomplete and sometimes, misleading, it should also be noted that what Jeff gets is what he gets. Since Jeff only owns a 20D, he can't be expected to magically pull out lenses from other systems and instead, has to rely upon those manufacturers to send him what he needs, and it's to their benefit that he gets at least a kit lens and something a bit better (either a prime or higher quality zoom) to make the review better reflect the ability of the camera.

Jeff did the same thing with the D200, he was testing it with the 18-200 VR and a lot of people complained about the lens instead of the camera.
So he tested both the D200 and the EOS 5D with 50mm primes (at the same day and time even, as the photos show).
The Pentax kitlens is known to be not a really great lens.
I guess what I am really commenting on is that Jeff felt it neccessary to comment that he was unhappy with the kit lenses before the reviews were even released.

That's the way I read it, too...
the word "mediocre" doesn't sound too good.
