Having an EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM for the WHOLE weekend and not being able to use it, spare a couple of 'test' shots the evening before it has to go home:(

This one is at 1/160s @ f/2.8, ISO 400:

A deal fell through at the last minute to photograph one of the opening games of the A-league soccer (our national competition). I had already acquired the lens (settle down Andy, I didn't buy it - yet).

1/100s @ f/3.2, ISO 400:

Don't you just hate the unnatural skin tones of your Canon DSLR!! Must have taken you ages to get them right in post processing  ;) (just making fun of a commonly heard urban myth that you often hear from Nikon owners (like timmciglobal)).

Very nice stuff, cw.

For the record: RAW processed to JPEG in DPP using 'Neutral' Picture Style with +3 sharpening.

I can live with the Canon skin-tones.;)

I just want to know why those kids aren't out working! When I was their age... :p (Is that getting to be a lame joke? :o )

I remember that when I was a kid I didn't need to wear such a silly thing on my head... we didn't look like absolute dorks on a bike!

As usual, the kids are great models. You really should submit them for some catalog work!

I gotta say the expression in #1 gets me when I looked at it in reference to the 400.

"Daddy, that big thing is worring me...i'm gonna ride like the wind to my "safe" place."

LOL

WOW that thing does just smother the backgound!!

"because of nikon's more pleasing skin tones"

Funny, last time I checked "more pleasing" didn't mean "the other is bad" just that when comparing two one is better then the other.

Now does that make these photos "bad" or "poor" or "not pleasing" no. It's simply less in comparison to something else.

Now could CW easily fix that in PS in about 2 seconds? Sure. Does he want the "nikon warm" look? Maybe not. Maybe he PREFERS this. Some people like warmer skin tones, some like less.

Wedding photogaphers in mass I'd argue prefer warmer skin tones, which is where my statment was made in reference to.

Tim

P.S. BTW, fantastic shots. Makes me sad the 400 is so expensive, you can do some amazing stuff with it.

Oh and I like 2nd the most. Least technicaly superior of the three but the most story telling, me and my bike :)

I remember when I was a kid, my dad only had a Pentax Spotmatic to shoot us. Then one day I played with it and broke it, and let's just say my dad showed me the definition of frustration.

P.S. Nice images, Christian. I wish you were my uncle, good neighbor, or something...

I hear ya Coldy. I grew up without them and survived, but now that I'm a father my perspective has changed a bit...

Yeah it's bloody pricey. I almost won't be disappointed if the A-league stuff doesn't materialise as if it does I will probably need to buy one of these suckers - and I can't afford it! (one of those damned if you do/damned if you don't things).

Skin tones: this was late afternoon/early evening light which is quite cool. I tried warming them a little more but it just didn't seem to be an accurate representation of the original scene. I'm OK with a slightly cooler look sometimes - I get sick of everything looking warm from all the weddings I do.:D
