I have been shooting with the kit lens lately, but yesterday I left it at home and forced myself to use the 50mm 1.8.

The range of the 50/1.8 is limiting, but some of the images produced by this lens are amazing for such a cheap lens. It's so fun to play with DOF. It really is a great lens to learn with. I'd love to try the 50/1.4.

Cropped only: (focus is actually on the front of the container on the left - amazing small DOF at large aperatures).

Very nice mate, I do believe this will be my next lens:p

Like the geometry of the cherry tomato shot

That first shot is very nice Michael. It's my second most used lens, the 50 1.8.

Amazing images for such a modest investment - surely the best value of any Canon lens?

As long as it focuses and you don't try to shoot wideopen, yes. (Focus can be a little iffy on my XT though on a 5D it worked great.)

Looks pretty good _ did you take up photography after being let go as the head of FEMA? ... :D

ROFL!!! That's funny.

Nice colors -- lil soft to me, 2nd one probably would have liked focus on tomatoes, but I've shot that before and their shiny skin makes it hard to tell if it's really in focus if that's all there is in the DOF.

The tomato shot looked very soft to me, until I realized that the focus point was on the container!
