How does everyone manage their photo libraries? I've been using a naming convention of 'yyyymmdd_description', such as '20060729_EAA_Airshow', which works up to a point. But when I got a second camera, I had to change it to 'camera_yyyymmdd_description', such as 'S2IS_20060729_EAA'.
But now I have photos spread over about 5 computers: two pcs at work, laptop at home, wifes pc at home, my photo-editing pc. I'm trying to come up with a solution where I move all my digital photos (50+ gig) onto one pc, where I can finally burn them all onto a series of DVD's. THen monthly backup new photos onto dvd. And nightly copy them onto another drive on another pc... disk space is cheap...
A coworker swears by Picasa; one of my goals is to overcome my wifes objection to digital - she never sees the photos, because I never print them out. And using windows explorer to browse photos just isn't user-friendly enough for her.
So since I'm consolidating all my photos onto one 'server', I want to get them well organized and have some kind of front end that the wife and kids can use to view the photos.
I briefly had this demented idea to write a visual basic program to find all the jpg files, extract the exif data, use that data to create a new name based on camera, date, description from the folder (EAA) and a sequence number, and write all the images into one huge folder, with the new names. Not sure what that would gain me...
Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I also currently dump 95% of my photos onto my website / photo gallery, for parents and kids from school to view. So that ends up being another couple copies of the images, resized down to 1600x1200 and 640x480...
Thanks
