View Full Version : How does the S2IS/S3IS stack up to the Nikon D50?

I found a D50 for sale after rebate, including lens, for $499 and I am ready to jump. I want a DSLR to "round out" my current camera collection, but what improvement will I see? Kit lens is the 18-55 so I know that I will miss the S2IS zoom...

Other than VERY little noise at high ISO, what will I gain? I want a DSLR that will "compliment" my S2IS (or vice-versa) when I am shooting. I always seem now to take stuff with me everywhere, and the D50 would be nice to have as well... I think.

What do you guys think?

Why the D50? when the XTi is released that should drop the price of the Rebel XT i would think. Cant you get the XT now for about $600? with kit lens.

Jump man jump, I don't think there's much of an argument as to whether or not the D50 is a good entry level camera. If 5bills is a good deal with a lens then go for it. I'd like to pick up a dSLR in the near future myself.

Unless your planning on selling your S2 why would you miss the zoom  lol  I don't know enough about the D50 to offer a fair comparison though there is a Nikon I have my eye on ;)

Bower64 - I was thinking of waiting to see what the Rebel did, but I don't care for the XT as much as I like the Nikon, plus, the Nikon uses SD cards! I have a lot of them now!!! ;)

XaiLo - I will sleep on it, but I think I may have one soon.... ;)

PS - No way would I sell the S2IS!!!:D

SD is cool, does it use a pack or rechargable AAs? Everything ive seen from a nikon looks really good but i just like canon.

They do make adaptors that turn SD cards into compact flash...

Just the first site that came up on a google search (http://www.expnet.com/product.nsf/p/CF-2RD)

It uses the pack... I do prefer the AA set up instead, but that seems to be the only drawback so far.

The problem with CF memory is the design. You run a huge risk removing the memory because when you put it back in you could bend the pins wich is the most common problem with that memory design. Do a search on google for bent pins on camera and you will find a bunch of them. It usualy gives memory errors or says there is no memory card in there.

With that adapter you have to remove the adapter just to access the sd card, thats worse then just using the CF memory.

If the adapter was designed so that you dont have to remove the CF card that might be a better way to go.
