My Canon A80 is just dead. Tried new batteries, removed the memory card, checked switches (battery latch and memory card door). Got it apart to check the power board for burnt parts (fuses) but nothing obvious.

Any ideas?? where are the fuses??

Do you have another camera? take it back apart and then pull the cover off the little gear box next to the lens mechanism. See if you can extend the lens then put the gears back in and try the power.

The fuses should be located on the powerboard. Ive never had the A80 apart so im not for sure where its located but the powerboard has the dc input jack connected to it, the red and black wires from the battery box should be running to it also.

When you checked both switches do they both look the same? I think the 2 key switches that control the power would be the battery door and the memory door. Both of these will keep the camera dead if they arnt connected. When the memory door is closed it breaks the connection so it can be removed if it looks questionable.

The battery door needs to be fully epressedd befire it will come on.

Thanks for the info...

I found the fuses (thanks to your previous pics) both are OK. Jumpered them and the two switches just to make sure... still the same.

The Zoom works ok if I jumper the batteries to the zoom motor.
Tried to power on with the zoom partially and fully extended, no go...

I must have a defective DC power board.

And you looked on both sides of the powerboard to make sure none of the componets looked melted like mine?

What if you hooked it to the computer? does yours power up byitself when connected to the computer?

I dont know why it would do that but is the memory button thing good? good voltage?

You know what i just thought of? bent pins on your CF card memory socket. If you look into the memory hole there are no bent pins right? There are 2 rows of uniform pins if any look out it may cause it to short and not power up. Try it with no memory card in it.

Ive seen a few that didnt hae bent pins but they were pushed back into the camera. ANd ive also seen 2 bent together touching and giving an error.

What if the button for the power is not actualy turning the camera on? ive seen bad button pads before also. If you push hard and kinda wiggle the power button does it do anything? Push all the buttons at once wile trying to power it on. Maybe a bad ground to the button pad?

just some thoughts.

Yeap, I checked both side of the power board, all component look good.
I tried to hook it up to the PC and nothing works. Same with using the DC adapter to provide power.
I checked the memory card slot and all the pins are ok, not bent or pushed in.
I metered the power button and found they use 2 wires on the flex flat wiring, one to provide the ground and the other to the power on/off switch and it's ok.

Looks like the power comes in, get passed the fuse and goes to an chip.
It must be the faulty beast!!!

Time to buy a new one.... probably not Canon this time.

Thanks for your help.
