I am curious about the Canon G6. Why was it discontinued? why did canon not make a G7? was there not enough demand for it? I ahve seen some pictures taken with it and I have NEVER seen any pictures that ebautiful in my life. when I read the review for the camera it sounded amazing. all of the quality it has it could pass off as a 2005 model? Also why is it so expensive? it was $699 when it came out? would it cost that much to make the came camera now? I am just saying it seems to me that it is like a DSLR quality P&S with all the bells and whistles and I would pay $800 maybe $900 if they made a G7. is there any chance of a G7 even in the distant future?

They discontinued the G6 and the Pro1 because Sony ran out of the wonderful sensors used in both cameras. That combined with the fact that DSLR's were heading mainstream contributed to the G series' demise. Even right now, the G6's are going for close to $1000 on eBay because there's nothing else on the market like them short of going the DSLR route.

As it stands, it's unlikely that we'll see anything like the G series or Pro series in the future. The S series is the closest you'll get to it in a point and shoot.

that stinks. the DSLR's cost even more than the G6 and are larger and weigh a ton more. I now know why I could not find my dream camera. they did not make it. I know if they made a G7 I would love it. the closest thing I think that is a P&S to the G7 is the A620 which is the camera I was in love with before I heard of the G6. the S80 is just a piece of junk compared to either of those 2. oh well. the G6 only costs $300-$650 ebay or otherwise I think so I might get it. only problem is the Canon A620 is very similar except in quality and that is cannot take lenses or flashes. and it is only like $215. I was waiting for the A640 but now I am going to dream of a G7.

The A620 can take "lenses" like the G6 can. The problem with the G6 is that its market got a LOT smaller now that the entry level DSLRs seem so cheap. That is probably the main reason you will not see a G7.

the problem is that most people do not mind the extra weight and size of a DSLR? is that what you are saying?

alright I accept that the G series is dead. now i have a new question. will there ever be DSLR cameras that can be the same size as the G6 ro smaller? this is including a lens equivalent to say the G6 or S3 IS.

and if they make these small DSLRs is there any chance of a roating live LCD display? I really want a P&S with digital quality it seems. maybe I should just pray for a G7?

You never know! but it's hard for a company to maintain an item that's steadily losing market share as coldrain stated. And unless a market study shows differently I wouldn't hold your breathe :(

what about smaller DSLRs with live view and roating LCD? is there any chance of those in the future? I am talking 3-5 yrs into the future.

To add on, the Sony R1 does cater to this niche market which desires a point and shoot with a fast lens and all the controls. It's a great camera, but it sold poorly (something around 50,000 units I read). As much as I like the concept, it's hardly profitable (especially compared to entry level DSLR's) which is largely why Canon, Nikon and others have abandoned this market. I might be completely wrong if Canon all of a sudden announces a PowerShot Pro 2 tomorrow, but that's the direction that that the general market is heading in.

well then maybe you can help me. I thought 3 pics I saw on the G6 were amazing I do not even think a DSLR makespic so vibrant. maybe they are over saturated? either way I will post links to them and maybe someone can tell me how to take similar pics with a P&S camera (if possible)

Doesnt the A620 use the same sensor as the G6? its a 7.1mp camera isnt it?

The G6 shoots in raw does the A620?

no the A620 does not do raw. also doesn't the lens affect the image as well? so could the G6 have an amazing lens?

I dont know, i thought all the canons used good lenses. And they seem to get better as the cameras get better. IMO the S3 lenses are better then the S2 when i look at the lens in the light it appears to have more coatings or somthing.

I agree with you though, there is a guy who shoots alot of pictures of guitars and im always wowed b his pictures. Sometimes the pictures just dont seam real. They look fake because they are so sharp and vibrant. The pictures of that foutain are like that. The sky seems SUPER blue and everything just seems to be painted with an airbrush or somthing.

yes I know and the water is just stopped. they used a fast frame and still got that amazing sky without any loss of anything. it looks liek it gained color and brightness. the bug on the flower is the same. it looks like more distance is focused. on other pics only a small part of the flower is focused. in that picture more of it is focused. Is that called dynamic range? oh well. I just have never seen photos like it and want ones to come out that good.

nevermind. I must have been thinking of a different bugone but still the colors are very vibrant like they are saturated.

I finally have solid, Canon-backed evidence that the G series is gone (for now).
