View Full Version : Suggestions on 2 lenses
Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on these two lenses?
Nikon 17-35mm F2.8
Nikon 12-24mm F4
I know the range is a little different for each one, but I am mainly looking for thoughts on quality of pictures from these lenses, and if you have a thought on which is better, throw it at me.:D

The 17-35 f2.8 is a fill frame lens, so preferrable if you also want to use it on a full frame film SLR. Else you should be looking at the 17-55 f2.8 DX, which is a lot less heavy and as good in the 17-35 range.
As far as I have read about the different APS-C wide angle zooms I'd prefer the Tokina 12-24 over the Nikon 12-24. I have of course not used the Nikkor.
Thanks CR, I have been looking into the 17-55 for sometime now and is deffinatly at the top of my to get list.
After looking at shots taken with both, I wasnt very pleased with the 12-24.
Thanks for the suggestions.

I went through this same decision 2 months ago, and this website listed below really helped me make up my mind.

Bottom line: The 12-24mm DX Nikkor had best optical performance and lowest overall distortion, build construction, as well as low light performance. The Tokina scored almost as good. These two lenses are a great choice!
I've been checking into that Nikon 12-24mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens myself. However, I may just hold off and opt for a D200 upgrade instead.

You do have a nice arsenal of lenses TNB, which will be great with a D200, but dont get your hopes up TOO high. The D50 is a very nice camera and the lens makes the bigger difference than the D200 vs. D50
I was just thinking of the D200 since it is a "faster" camera and if I keep taking photos of fast moving objects, it may be a nice upgrade once I get the settings down. I even snapped a few photos at one of the soccer fields until the two teams (around 50 people) started pushing each other around, then I took more photos though there was no actual fist-to-fist fighting. I did trash the photos later though since I didn't plan to put them on my website. Meanwhile, the guy I was with was using a D2Xs though we were using the same lens. ;)
