Thinking about the new carry-on regime, is it possible to carry a laptop and camera within the limitations of 45cm x 35cm x 16cm (about 17.7in x 13.7in x 6.2in)?

I'm throwing this open to anybody. My kit comprises Tamron 28-75, 17-35, 70-300, hyperdrive, 420EX and XT+BGE3, Canon charger. I can always run the flash off AA batteries if absolutely essential and those batteries and charger can go in hold luggage anyway. I might change the 70-300 for a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 when it comes out or the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 if the Tamron rumours are hogwash.

I was wondering whether the Apple MacBook (smaller version) would fit nicely within the dimensions or whether it might in fact be advantageous to get an old iBook 12".

I know I can fit the camera kit into the space provided without much trouble. I have a small camera bag that fits the luggage dimensions although it's not big enough for everything.

What I'm wondering about is maximising the amount that can be carried and working out an ideal bag and ideal gear set up for everybody so everybody has a solution. This is no doubt a difficult problem.

One thing I'm wondering about is whether a briefcase might be the answer with DIY lining and partitions. There could also be ties placed inside to keep everything in place when it's opened.

The best I have seen so far is this:

Rhys-
One of the better sites I've found for 'the new regime,' and your intent, may be:
http://www.all-pelican-cases-4-less.com/detail_pelican_1510.html

Try getting a card board box and tape it to the dimensions. Layout all of the gear and see what 'left over' clearances are left for foam padding and you'll have a better idea of whether the desired gear is suitable for a carry on...

This site also has the Storm brand of hard cases, as well...
