I'm looking at borrowing a flash or two to try out with my D70 and I primarily shoot with available light so my knowledge of which flashes are compatible is limited. I know that there are the SB-600 and SB-800 flashes....should I stick soley to these or could I try using say a Vivitar? I know that I've heard that if the flash isn't compatible it can cause damage to the camera....any advice or suggestions?

SB-600 and 800 will fully support the I-ttl (or D-ttl in d70 I think) and pair up with wireless commander mode if you buy a SB-800 (or D200 or D80 in future)

I'd stick with the nikon's. The SB-800 is a fantastic pack with a difuser and 5th battery adapter for faster recharge.

You can use either the SB600 or 800. Since the D70(s) has Speedlight Commander built-in, the 600 is probably your best bet as you can use the 600 in the hot shoe, or as a remote. The SB800 (I have one) is only slightly brighter and has a redundant speedlight commander as well.

The cost to equal the capabilities of the SB600 would be about the same for a 3rd party flash, so why not go with the speedlight built to match the cameras capabilities.

Get the SB600 and don't look back.;)
